This assertion is often attributed to ethics and leadership expert Frank
J. Navran, but he says he found it in a long-lost SF book. I often use
the expression, and would like to attribute it. Can anyone here please help?

Thanks-

Trust is the natural consequence of promises fulfilled....trust results
from having one’s expectations met, of having no unrealized expectations
(what we refer to as disappointments).

I did, some while ago, which led to a pleasant chat. He would also like
to know the original source. His best recollection was that it was from
a SF book, per OP; but author, title and plot are lost.

Possibly someone in this literate group recalls the story or context?

Thanks-

To take on the imperfections of the world means
of course that your heart will be saddened, your
self-confidence impaired, your trust disappointed.
You will know despair. But isn't maturity the
ability to surmount despair? Isn't that what
growing up is all about--learning to outlast
despair?

There was peace in their hearts. They were filled
with the fearlessness of those who have lost
everything, the fearlessness which is not
easy to come by but which endures.
