Well, since you asked...but first, explain to me why you think Kurt
Cobain sold his soul to eMpTy-V...that is one of the most ignorant,
pretentious statements I've ever heard in my life.

The point was, Don, that because you're an "oldster" doesn't mean you
know what the fuck you're talking about. It was that clear.
I'm also waiting for valid points, so we're in the same boat on that one...

Well, you said you were *an* authority, excuse me...

I feel you are ignorant and you don't know what you are talking about
because of retarded statements like "Kurt Cobain Sold His Soul to MTV" or
"Fugazi are sell-outs" both of which are so blatantly untrue, that I have
no other choice but to think you have no fucking clue what you're talking
about.

I have plenty to say, its pretty obvious, and I've chosen to at least
attempt to back up any bullshit statements I make, unlike you Don.

Aw, shucks. You onlt REAL punkers listen to bands that can't play to more
than 50 drunk people in a venue not much larger than a garage. What werre you
thinking, Mike?? :)

Seriously...most 'REAL' punks I know couldn't give a flying fuck what band
charts the highest or plays to the least amount of people. Most 'REAL' punks
I know listen to music because they, uh, like it! Which seems to rule out the
almighty Don.

Funny, but I notice alot of intelligent and thought out posts from Mike and
have yet to see anything of any value or meaning come out of Don's mouth.
It's all been 'Fuck you, I see REAL punk shows, not Fugazi' or some variation
there-of. It's like Don and Ian share the same friggin brain and it's hooked
up to a rotting carrot.

I got a question. did you read the interview he did with Rolling Stone
recently? He HATES stupid blind ass followers who devote their life to
him (or so he says). But, still, I'm willing to bet you'd freak him
out.
Besides, as far as dominating the music scene, the Beatles sold (and
will continue to sell) infinitely more records, and had a larger percent
of the buying public buying their stuff in their heydey. And the Sex
Pistols caused more controversy, and GG Allen was much better at the
sick-fuck business.

would be remembered for.

Oh, shut up. No one really cares about marilyn manson. His music is OK,
but Mansonites?? And when the hell did he dominate the music scene

M MANSON is as musically dominant as ABBA, as scary as SCORPIONS, as
energetic as GREEN DAY and as creative as CELINE DION.
And as satanic as MOTLEY CRUE.
I'd even rather listen to KISS.
Unless you're 12 years old.

Ivfe said it before Ill say it again...If MM was REALLY shocking, hed be
in jail all the time or dead of a drug OD like GG. Marilyn is not a
freak, he is a product. I saw him a couple years back, and there was mno
freakish schtick to the show, they were just a below average metal band,
a real sleeper of an act. He decided the freak thing would turn a
profit. I dont hate the man, I respect him, hes a genius, the worlds
idiots are paying his bills.

Aidan, you're completely out of touch with reality. I usually don't make
such blunt comments, but that is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in
quite a while (no, wait, you were trolling, right?) It's quite similar to
saying "The 80's was the decade of Sigue-Sigue-Sputnik"... a statement
that some would actually agree with.

No, I disagree...Nirvana is the most influential and was and still is
the most important band of the 90's. Nirvana is a legendary rock band,
Manson is a fad rock band. Manson may be the most popular band right
now, but at the same time, they are the most hated band. Nirvana
brought people together, gave them a musical taste. I'd bet that if
Kurt were alive, Nirvana would still be more popular than Marilyn
Manson.

MM Started the entire thing? Uhmmmm.. no. Sorry, I hate to interject
into stupid crossposting shit with moronic Manson and Cobang heads, but
come on. First of all:

You want some "Goth" music, check out Bauhaus - they're from the 70's,

Marilyn Manson is NOT shocking. GG Allin makes him look like a goddamned

I dont really care for Nirvana myself, but this cat has a point...They
really were influential..They started the whole mainstream grunge
revolution, for better or for worse (I wasnt too pleased with it), and I
have not seen a band that has made more of a splash. (Or gotten so muc
undeserved publicity..except Oasis and Bush...)

It's very difficult to follow threads on various newsgroups when they
are clogged with completely irrelevant posts from completely unrelated
newsgroups. Many people DO depend on these newgroups for important
information and ideas about various bands, styles.

I would ask that everyone consider this when sending out "bulk mail" to
various "alt.music.------" groups. Sure, many newsgroups are
compatible, general and proper for a broader posting of some items,
announcements, etc. But, to continually carry on cross-raving about a
specific group with long-running dialogues, often full of nothing more
than negative cross-posting at each other - across the entire spectrum
of "alt.music.----" newsgroups... is just garbage.

Really? I seem to recall about 10 years ago a bunch of black clad
freaks, that were hanging out, being depressed, going to see the Rocky

Whatever. The Marilyn Manson age....? I don't think so. Face it, if
groups like Mudhoney, The Melvins, and Nirvana didn't make it big and
break on the scene Manson would still be a closet pedophile who wished

I am 30 years old and I remember when punk first "broke"--I was 9
years old and did not even hear any punk but was sure it was from the
devil. We heard that the Sex Pistols drank urine and blood and had sex
on stage (not true--although Iggy Pop did stuff as crazy as this).
Anyway, it was a couple years before I decided to listen to some punk
music--and it was great! It was throbbing and angry and you could dance
like a maniac to it. This was especially great since I was experiencing
teenage angst and wasn't having any sex. The anger in the music was a
lot like the anger I was feeling and I loved to slam dance--I got a tooth
knocked out and broke my ankle while partaking in this activity.
Anyway, we have this new band Marilyn Manson that seems to want
to pose themselves as having something to do with punk. They do
not--they are anti-punk. The music has absolutely no throb to it at
all--it's just damned *boring*! I think people like the pose and pretend
to like the "music" because it is an excuse to dress up like a succubus
and smoke clove cigarettes. But once the novelty wears off the "music"
will die. I think Journey has more energy than MM!

If you must label Marilyn Manson it would be heavy metal, not punk. I like

Heavy metal? The first music called "heavy metal" was blues-inspired
stuff like Led Zeppelin. A lot of the stuff they call "heavy metal" now
is punk with pointless guitar solos played on top of it. MM is mostly
noisy showing off. It is kind of like heavy metal in that it is hard to
listen to, but unlike it because there is no driving rhythm to it.
Anyway, if MM has nothing to do with punk, why are fans always
posting to punk newsgroups? I mean, the Ramones were trying to do the
exact opposite of what MM is doing. They stripped music of pointless
elaboration and ridiculous posing.
BTW, I am a geezer now and listen to almost nothing but good
jazz. That is very interesting music for all you youngsters. Stay away
from New Age music--it will poison your ears to good music.

granted, Nirvana had videos on MTV and pretty much operated within the music

What is it with Bowie? The local "alternative" paper, the New
Times, ran a review of his new album wherein they said it really rocked
and that new guitarist was really great. If you ever doubted that
chewing nutmeg seeds blows out your brain and chews your hearing, this
guy is evidence!* Those new songs are not really bad--and I really am
glad that Bowie is trying his "scary rock genius" pose again--but once
that guitarist starts playing--gag! I could drop a guitar down a flight
of stairs and it would sound better than that! He is
either tone deaf or deranged. That one single from the album could be a
passable pop song if that worthless fuck would not start scraping his
guitar like that. Sound bytes from cat torture sessions would
give the same effect. The only other band that sounds this bad is Marilyn
Manson. I think this whole thing is a big joke on impressionable
youth.
Once again, I challenge people who like that music to explain to
me why I should give it another chance. I think the biggest MM fans in
the world hate the music and that is why nobody is standing up for them.

Yeah, but you know Tim, there is a little more to it than that. A lot
of punk attempts to be political, even revolutionary, yet can't hardly
get itself arrested. All talk, no action. An absurd middle-class pose
for an elite with the wherewithal to afford it. Manson, on the other
hand, without making any particularly overt political statements, has
been denounced by none other than William Bennett, fat bloated morality
fuhrer, various other corporate and conservative political luminaries,
and picketed by hundreds of fundamentalist christians on numerous
occasions. Out there in rightwing America Manson resonates like no
anarchy punk band ever has, and is perceived as far more of a threat
than anything that ever came out on a colored vinyl 7" with a limited
press run of 500. Kids growing up under the grim reality of
fundamentalist christian rule finally have someone they can rally
around to protest a situation they are forced to deal with everyday. A
lot of the denouncements of Manson strike me as the petulant sniffs of
an elite who revel in the purity of their feckless obscurity, and is
really an expression of contempt for those people who in a truly
radical situation would be their natural allies.

I agree. Marily Manson is definitely not punk. I hate it when people
categorize them as alternative. They aren't even close. They are
definitely heavy metal/crap.

They are not heavy metal. Although I must agree with you, it is crap.
But definitely NOT HEAVY METAL.

Ya know, I was gonna avoid this whole Manson thing but I figure what the hell,
I'll toss my two cents in:
What cracks me up about that guy is that he puts up this front of being
like some 'Anti-Rock Star'. When he played here he had his army of children putting these flyers everywhere
saying he was going to destroy their image of rock and roll icons and all this...
so the day of the show he shows up late, does a two second sound check, does some drugs in the dressing room
and takes one of the local girls back to the hotel.
Hmmm... sounds like a typical rock and roll star to me!

I read somewhere (I believe in Rolling Stone--in the waiting room of a
dr's office) that Manson patterned himself and his band after their
favorite 80's cock rock bands: Motley Crue, Grim Reaper, Alice Cooper,
and W.A.S.P.

And ooooh, are'nt they so shocking--naming themselves after famous
serial killers: Manson--Ramierez--Gacy--etc. Ooooooooooooh!

It's pointless to try and categorize MM as Goth, Punk, Alternative,
Industrial or Metal. There is really only one catch all word that
encompasses the bands music: Shit.

Don't bother flaming me if you're an MM fan. I'll simply ignore it as I
ignore all of MM's music, fans, goals, etc. Your opinions are not really
respected by me, or anybody in the music industry.
