Also, do they REALLY have to sell two separate editions? Don't they
have the technology to just put wide and full-screen versions on the
same disc, maybe on the flip side?
Definitely wide-screen.

widescreen always. fullscreen often times chops one scene into two scenes
cut back and forth(like two people talking to eachother would be cut back
and forth to their faces on full screen, while widescreen would have both of
their heads in the same shot).
A lot of DVDs do have widescreen on one side and fullscreen on the other.
I'm guessing the dvd distributors make a conscious decision not to have both
versions on a disc as a way to make more money.
Wide screen is ALWAYS the best option. Wide screen allows you to see the
entire image that was filmed, whereas a full-screen version cuts out
action on either side. It screws up the true to life aspect ratio and
ruins the whole film-viewing experience!!!!!!!!!

Or they do that awkward jerky panning thing.

Bing.

Widescreen, now that I have a bitchin' TV!
But please note, I have a bit of a hearing problem and always, ALWAYS have
the captions turned on my TV so I don't blast out the house just watching
a movie. Widescreen puts the captions below all the action so they're
perfectly readable, don't interfere with the movie, etc..

Anyone who's owned a double sided DVD knows they're fucking crap and get
scratched way way too easy. I'm happy that they sell 2 different editions,
don't see why this is something to complain about? I know if I still had a
tiny 19" TV I'd have to go fullscreen...

i prefer full screen
Watch the same scene in both versions. In my example, we'll take Goodfellas
and the first scene were Henry gets visited in jail by Karen. The camera
pans right across the visitors bullpen until it meets up with Henry & Karen.
In the pan & scan (or full screen) version, you see a bald guy, mostly cut
out of the shot, on the left as the camera begins to move. In the
widescreen version, you see the woman on the floor giving him head.
'nuff said.

Not always. What bites is when a movie was once fullscreen, and the top
and bottom are cut off just so these DVD purists can get their bloody
widescreen fix. Here are three examples of fullscreen movies that have
recently been chopped for wide:
1. Evil Dead (the first one)
2. Eraserhead
3. Koyaanasqatsi
Sure, pan'n'scan is annoying.. but it's just as annoying when someone's
eyes are covered with an artificial black bar across the top, or the
action at the bottom is totally obscured. I wanna see a movie in it's
OAR.. that's original aspect ratio.
