One Who Fascinets
NAMWAN, a 10-year-old monkey who was abandoned by her owners
three years ago, has become addicted to smoking.
Over the last three years, while living in a temple at
Kanchanaburi in western Thailand, she began to pick up
discarded cigarette butts. Now she has been unable to
break the habit and she pesters passers-by to give her
a cigarette.
Monkeys in Thailand have long been known for their
dexterity. In the province of Lop Buri they have the
freedom of the city and each year are treated by the
citizens to a slap-up food festival in the main square.
In southern Thailand, in particular in the island of Ko
Samui, one of the favoured destinations of tourists,
monkeys are trained to reap the coconut harvest. They
line the trees throwing coconuts down to their trainers
and even stack them in piles for processing.
At the crocodile farm in Samut Prakarn, visitors are
treated to a daily exhibition where monkeys perform
tricks, handing round cigarettes and finally extinguishing
the butts with stones.
