All Doc Savages except #183 and #133 where published under the Street & Smith
house pseudonym of "Kenneth Robeson". #1 was credited to "Kenneth Roberts".
Farmer was listed as the author on #183, Dent as the author of #133.
Note on reprints:
Bantam reprinted #1-96(Bantam #s) as single novels. From #97-126 they where
published as double novels. At the same time Bantam reprinted #1-27
as doubles. After that Bantam published 13 Omnibus editions containing
4-5 novels. _Red Spider_ was purchased by Street & Smith and would have been
released after _The Swooning Lady_, but never published. Names in brackets
are Bantam retitles.
Bantam is not numbering the novels from _Escape from Loki_ on.
Also, #190 on have not been published yet, so the order may change.
Murray has only written up to #190, so titles & ordering after that are
guesswork.
Street & Smith published 3 Doc novels in hardback in 1935, with introductions
by Lester Dent. I have not seen these.
Golden editions where published in 1975 as hardbacks. They are in the same
style as the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew series of that time. Apparently they
where also abridged. I know of only 6.

Supersnipe (S&S) 'several issues' Oct42-Aug/Sep49
S&S comic book version of Doc started off with adaptations of Dent
novels, but with the Aug 41 issue they changed him into a super-hero.
He only has Ham and Monk helping him and he is more of a 'super-hero'.
When he 'goes into action' all he wears are pants and boots and a hood
with some mystic ruby in its forehead which gives him superpowers.
The Mystic Ruby was eventually dropped after he returned to the Shadow
comics.
Doc Savage (Golden Key) #1 Nov 1966
adaptation of _Thousand-Headed Man_. This was to tie in with a
proposed Doc movie by Goodson-Todman.

Adapts several Doc novels, but he is drawn in the style of the
Bantam paperback (widows peak hair) and wears a vest with no shirt.

Rocketeer Graphic Novel (Eclipse) 1985?
Reprints the Rocketeer story line that appeared in several
comics and which was the basis of the Disney film. In the
graphic novel, Doc (tho not identified as him) is the creator
of the rocket pack (Millineum makes a reference to this).
We never see his face because he is wearing a helmet, but we
meet Ham (wearing a monacle and moustache) and Monk. Because
of copyrights these characters are never identified by name,
hence Disney's changing them.
Doc Savage (DC Comics) #1-4 [mini-series] Nov87-Feb88
Tries to create a modern-day Doc by having Doc be 'zapped'
across the universe in the late 40s and return in the 80s.
Before this happens we learn Doc married Monja and has a son.
His son is killed but not before getting his girl friend pregnant.
After his return, Doc is assisted by his grandson "Chip" and
two new aides, one of whom is the son of a man Doc's aides got
to 'stand-in' for Doc after he disappeared. {they thought he was
dead}.
In this series, Doc is drawn more accurately, but wears his special
vest over his clothes, rather than being hidden. His aides do not
look quite like the pulps (the 80s Monk looks like Wilfred Brimley).
This mini-series is a lead-in to a new series...
Doc Savage (DC Comics) #1-24, Annual 1 Nov88-Oct90
Starts off as a modern-day Doc series, but in 16-18 Doc crosses
over with Shadow 5,6 for a team-up. Following this some of the
rest of the series is based in the 30s. The Annual deals with
the 1936 Olympics and Doc meeting his aides at Loki in WWI.
In this series we find out what happened to Monja and Pat since
his disappearance. Pat's daughter joins up as one of Doc's new
aides and we also meet the "Russian Doc Savage".
John Sunlight also returns.
Doc Savage (Millineum) [mini-series] 1991-
Considered by many to be the best Doc comic version yet.
Publisher plans for a series of mini-series. The first is entitled:
"The Monarch of Armageddon" and has John Sunlight right after
_The Devil Genghis_. If this series does well, they hope to continue.
Most accurate portrait of Doc's aides then previously.
Millennium is also putting out specials on Pat and another with
info on Doc. The "Manual" will include info and art on Doc as
well as info on the proposed (now long dead) animated TV series
and proposed newspaper strip.

All where original stories. Nothing is known about the
show. Odyssey published all the scripts in 2 volumes.

This show was based on the ruby-wearing comic book version
of Doc. Odyssey published a volume with 3 scripts. Lasted
for 7 months. Have no other information.
_Adventures of Doc Savage_ 1985
Produced for National Public Radio. Was adaptations of Dent
books. Will Murray adapted _Thousand-Headed Man_ as a
6-part series. _Fear Cay_ was adapted by producer Roger Rittner.
MOVIES
Serials (1930s and 40s)
Apparently movie serials of Doc where proposed, but because
an inexperienced Dent insisted in writing them, they where never
done.
_Thousand-Headed Man_ (never made)
A movie proposed back in 1966 from Goodson-Todman which was
to star Chuck Conners as Doc. Production company then decided
on using _The Phantom City_. Blocked by legal problems because
Conde' Nast, holders of the Doc copyright, where unaware that
Dent's survivors held the movie rights to Doc.
_Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze_ Warner Brothers, 1975
The infamous George Pal Doc movie. Has Ron Ely (Tarzan) as
Doc. Pal planned a second movie (_The Arch-Enemy of Evil_),
but because this one bombed it never happened. Available on
video tape. _Arch-Enemy_ was actually the first movie written.
TV
Animated TV series 1960's (never made)
Doug Wildey, an artist for the "Jonny Quest" show, proposed an
animated Doc series. Never got farther then a proposal. Artwork
created for it can be seen in Millenium's "Manual of Bronze".
NEWSPAPER STRIP
Doc Savage (1930's, never done)
Lester Dent and artist did a week's worth of a Doc Savage newspaper
strip to try to get interest in this. Never picked up. Art may be
seen in Millenium's "Manual of Bronze".

himself (the Shadow). This was written as by Grant. There was to
be a second as by Robeson, but it never appeared.
_Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life_ a "biography" of Doc.
_A Feast Unknown_ a soft-porn novel staring "Doc Caliban", the real
Doc Savage, and "Lord Grandrith", the real Tarzan.
_The Mad Goblin_ a sequel to _Feast_ focusing on Doc.
_The Secret Immortals_ as yet unwritten (?) conclusion to _Feast_.
_Ironcastle_ Farmer has translated an added to the original work of
French author J.H. Rosny. The main character & Doc made a trip
to Maple White Land (from Doyle's _Lost World_). This is mentioned
in passing at the beginning.
_A Barnstormer in Oz_. Doc makes an appearance as 'Shants the Shirtless'.

"Prince Zarkon" series. Appearance by "Ham" Brooks, reference to Doc,
Pat Savage apparently has married Cap't Hazzard.
A modern-day pulp series based on The Avenger and Doc Savage.

With issue #26 a series of stories involving the invasion of the Purple Empire
began and continuing for 13 issues. A similar series involving an invasion by
Japan (lead by the Yellow Vulture) was begun later and never concluded as the
magazine stopped publication.
The Dimedia editions are large format facimile reprints.

Gibson scripted at least the first six years.
The Shadow (Archie/Radio Comics) #1-8 Aug64-Sep65
Without a doubt the worst Shadow comic. #1 & 2 has
a blond jet-setting Lamont Cranston who is the Shadow.
From #3 on, the Shadow is a super-hero, wearing a blue and
green outfit complete with mask and cape who fights Shiwan
Khan. One thing the Shadow does is practice in a "Danger Room"
The Shadow (DC Comics) #1-12 Oct/Nov73-Aug/Sep75
One of the better versions. Issues 1-4,6 are the best with art
by Mike Kaluta. DC has recently reprinted these issues in hard-
back as _The Private Files of the Shadow_ along with a previously
unpublished story. The Avenger teams-up in issue #11.
The Batman (DC Comics) #252,257 1973
Shadow crosses over into Batman. Written by Denny O'Neill, author
of DC Shadow comic.
The Shadow: Blood and Judgement (DC) #1-4 [mini-series] 1986
A controversial updating by writer/artist Howard Chaykin with
a new twist on his origin. DC has reprinted this in a graphic
novel entitled _Blood and Judgement_ in 1987.
The Shadow (DC) #1-19, 2 annuals Aug87-Jan89
A continuation of the modern Shadow, tho without alot of the sex
and violence of Chaykin. The title is broken into well defined
"novels". The first novel has art by Bill Sienkeivitz, the rest
has art by Kyle Baker, all are written by Andy Hefler. The Shadow
gets killed in #13, and his body it taken by a rock star so that
at the end of the series is just his head on a robot body. The
storyline was unfinished and there where rumours the writer and
artist would complete it in a graphic novel. Has not happened.

The Shadow 1941: Hitler's Astrologer (Marvel) Graphic Novel #35. 1988?
A graphic novel by Dennis O'Neil and Michael Kaluta who did DC's
version in the 70s. This was published while DC was doing their
modern-day version and there were rumors that DC would do the modern
version, and Marvel would do the 30s and 40s version as graphic
novels. This never happened. Was published as a hard-back and only
recently reprinted in paperback.
Crime Classics (Malibu) #1-13 1988?
Reprints the Shadow NEWSPAPER strip.
Rocketeer Adventure Magazine (Comico) #1-3 (3 not yet published)
This is the second Rocketeer comic series by its creator, Dave
Stevens. Here he is hired by a "Mr. Jonas" to be a pilot. We
know that he is really the Shadow, but copyrights prevent this
from being said.
The Shadow Strikes! (DC) #1-31, Annual 1 Sep89-Apr92
DCs newest series now set in the 30s and 40s. Series has had good
and bad stories. Shiwan Khan appeared in two story lines and we
find out his connection with the Shadow as well as Margo's 'origin'.
Doc teams up in #5,6 of Shadow Strikes and Doc #16-18.
The series ends with the two part origin of the Shadow,
a sort of "Shadow: Year One".
The Shadow (???) 1992?
Another comics company has picked up the license to do a Shadow
comic. Have no idea who it is or when it will appear.
RADIO SHOW
The Shadow started as a narrator on the Radio. This ran from 1930-35.
Then in 1937 the show was about the Shadow himself. This version
ran from 1937 to 1954 and is where most people remember the Shadow
from. This is where Margo Lane came from and is why most people think
the Shadow is Lamont Cranston (those who read the pulps know better!)
NEWSPAPER STRIP
The Shadow also had a newspaper strip. It lasted from 1941-42.
Gibson scripted it with art by Vernon Greene. Ledger Syndicate
produced it. Malibu Comics recently reprinted many of them
(all of them??) in _Crime Classics_ #1-13.

WH was created by author/editor Byron Preiss in the mid-late 70s.
Its intension was to be a "New American Pulp", with new heroic
characters inspired by the classic pulp characters. Many of the
authors where comic-book writters, others where familiar with the
pulp characters. In addition to this the series was also heavy
on art, having many well know artists illustrate the stories.
The series was 'packaged' by Byron Preiss Visual Productions and was
published by Pyramid/Jove/HBJ. Four of the books are anthologies,
four are novels. Unfortunately, most of the characters where never
seen after the demise of WH. Preiss did write one novel about his
character Guts, and planned a second. This was published by Ace, maybe
as part of a 'revival' as single novels. Tor reprinted Farmer's
Greatheart Silver stories in a single volume with new art. A lot of these
characters had potential and it is unfortunate they did not continue.
Most of the authors hoped to write more about these characters.
Ron Goulart's "Quest of the Gypsy" was meant to be a series of novels,
the first lasting 3-4 novels, but we have only seen two.

I see that there is no information under reprint for The Moon Man.
There have been Moon Man reprints, they are just not very well known, at
least one large hardback book of Moon Man stories were printed, and
another one was planed, however I don't know if it ever came out.
And sorry but I do not have the information about that book right now
but I will try and find it again.

I am aware of two volumes reprinting all (most) of the Moon Man stories,
but would like to know what stories were reprinted in which volumes,
as well as who published it etc.
