I was wondering if anyone out there had any information of which
issues of The Shadow pulp were illustrated by Bob Powell, the artist
responsible for the art in many issues of The Shadow comic book series
in the late forties. Supposedly all of the work he did for the pulp
series was in the digest sized issues, circa 1946. The only one I
have been able to so far identify is "No Safety in Numbers" from
November 1946.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I am not aware of any 'published' work identifying the interior artists for
_The Shadow_.

Anthony Tollin is an expert on The Shadow.
Paul McCall is a expert on pulp artists.

However I have no addresses immediatly to hand.

Powell did the cover for the Aug.-Sept. 1948 SHADOW, the last of the
digest-sized issues. The cover is interesting inasmuch as it's rendered in pen
and ink, comic-style, as opposed to being a painting.

Interestingly I saw Anthony this afternoon, we both frequent the same
comic book store in NJ, he's going to be moving to Arizona (I think)
shortly and I don't have any contact info for him.
BUT I have collected the work of Bob Powell for over 25 years and have
many pages of original artwork by him including a S&S pulp illustration,
not The Shadow unfortunately although I do have some pages from a Shadow
comic book he did.
If you want someone to identify if an artist is Powell or not, send me a
scan and I'd be glad to give it a look. I can tell his work anywhere.

Ed, Gang,

This might be the same Bob Powell that also did comic art. He's in a few of
the comic art history and artist encyclopedia books. Somewhat known for his
WW2 war comics, aviation stuff.

Just for the record, yes, it is the same Bob Powell, or S.R. Powell as
he sometimes signed his work. He was the artist on The Shadow comic
book from Street & Smith for some years in the forties as well. There
are a few rather extensive listings availible for Powell's work in the
comic book field, but none even mention that he also did art for The
Shadow pulp series.
