I've recently acquired a large number of The Shadow old time radio
shows and have started listening to them, and it has renewed my
interest in reading the original novels. My question is, how good are
the reprints? I've seen in Mr. Olsen's reviews (or perhaps elsewhere)
that some of the novels were heavily edited, is this the case? I know
that Mr Olsen had the novels in etext (I even had downloaded a large
number of them, and since lost the CD), but that's no longer an
option, due to copyright issues, alas. I'm mostly interested in
seeing the original version, as that's the one that is most
authentic. A modern editor would possibly mess up all sorts of things
by making it more, ahem, postmodern, as it were.

Any information greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The Nostalgia Ventures reprint series are copies of the originals. Can't
get any closer than that. I've purchased all mine through Adventure House.

That's cool, I've checked it out per your recommendation. I suppose
I'll have to wait until I can afford $12.95 each for all of those. I
mean, what they have out is over $250, and they're going to keep
going. And they're not even in order. Hrm.

Thanks.

Alternately, is there anyone in Pittsburgh willing to lend books to
someone they don't know?

If you're near a Borders, I think most of them carry the reprints.
Sometimes, they're in the Buy One, Get One Half-Price sale. I'm a
'rewards member,' and I'm forever getting 30% coupons, which I use to
buy the latest issue. (I've rarely paid $12.95...)

You might be disappointed. The Shadow of the novels is nothing like
the invisible playboy of the radio. In novels, our hero has a pair of
big .45s and he knows how to use them! He never misses. The Baldwin
movie attempts to merge the two versions.

It is more correct to say The Shadow rarely misses. He will purposely
miss by firing at policemen to warn them off. Other times, something
in between will block his shot. I remember one recent reprint where
he missed due to his being gassed.

I get my reprints from Mike Chumko and get a slight discount. I
believe Nostalgia Ventures offers discount subscriptions.
