The November 1940 issue of Astounding has the following half-page
notice on the bottom of page 160:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
ORIGINAL COVER PAINTINGS AVAILABLE

For the first time, Astounding Science-Fiction is offering the original
oil paintings used on its covers for sale. This is not a contest--save
in that the order that is postmarked earliest gets the first chance on
the selected cover. Any of the covers from October, 1933 to that of the
February, 1935 issue may be purchased; the price in each case is ten
dollars.

If you want one:

Select the cover you want from the reproduction in your file
of Astoundings.

Select also, if you want, a second and third choice.

Specify month and year of the cover selected.

Send your request, and ten dollars, to the Editor, Astounding
Science-Fiction, 79 Seventh Avenue, New York, N. Y.

No one individual wil be allowed more than one painting; give
the other fellow a chance, for there aren't many.

A science-fiction club may buy up to three.

Ten bucks!!!

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the conversion index
for 1940 to 2003 is about 13.1 -- so, in 2003 dollars, these are
being offered for about $131.

These would have all been Howard Brown covers. Brown did the covers
for Scientific American in the 1920s, then worked for Astounding
and Thrilling Wonder Stories.

Also FYI, here's a link to a french site with all the 1934 covers
on one page, so you can get an idea of what Brown's work is like --
classic old-style SF.

(use the "Page précédente" and "Page suivante" links to get to
1933 and 1935)

Jeez -- Ten bucks!
