People have been posting here!

Sorry not to have been around... didn't realise anyone was still here!
What's been going on?

(PearL - of COURSE I'm going to answer your e-mail! Sorry I haven't
done so already - but, yes, I'm going to answer it.)

All the best,

Sarah

Well, they *weren't*.....until I let out that big ole
scream!

Venting!

I just did a little read-thru on your latest entry, and
there was something that struck me: you wrote
"That we live in a world where my son is going to want
expensive things." My immediate reaction was - Not
Necessarily! That's one of the 'tricks' of parenting I've
discovered -- paying attention to what each child really
enjoys and values. I remember when Griffin turned 4
and I got him what he REALLY wanted....

An umbrella and a pair of children's scissors.

(I think I threw in a book or a puzzle, but he wasn't
particularly excited by THOSE).

He was *thrilled* with his umbrella and scissors.
Were they expensive? Nope.

But the look on his face was Priceless!

Charlotte had tremendous fun with a box one Xmas. She ignored the
rocker that came out of the box and played at going through the box all
day. The most expensive thing I'm buying this year is her violin. For
other Xmases I've bought electronic games that are still in their boxs.
She's always been able to amuse herself with simple things. Paper and
pens and she was happy. Although she's now growing up and being
influenced by what others have got to a certain extent but she's a
sensible girl and knows what things cost.

Oh, bless him - how lovely!

I'm mainly worried about the whole 'everyone else has one' problem. But
you're right - it won't necessarily be a problem. (This is my son,
after all - when I was a child it would never have occurred to me to
care about what other people had when planning my present list! One of
the advantages to innately poor socialisation skills...)

I should stop trying to meet trouble half-way. No doubt parenting will
throw up quite enough problems without me trying to anticipate ones that
may never happen. Besides, seems like so far the problems that have
come up have been the very things I *haven't* anticipated as problems -
there's definitely a lesson in that. ;-)

Golly - he must be (quick calculation) 13 now - is that right? And
Tucker was just about to turn 3 when I was there, so now he must be 10 -
I think the title of this thread is the right one here!

I think that's really the key to it - try to concentrate on bringing
kids up to be sensible. That's what I'll try to do!

BTW, sounds as though I might have missed a few of your e-mails. Got
one earlier in the year (and I'm sorry I never answered that - I have no
excuse other than being a disorganised pillock), and I got the reply to
mine in the past few days. But PearL said you'd written a few more, and
I never got those (I'm guessing my husband might have deleted them
accidentally in spam sweeps). Just thought I'd better let you know I
wasn't ignoring you all this time!

I gather Joe was trying the line about me being a thwarted bunny-boiler
again last time he e-mailed you? What did he say?

Tell him yes. But first you need to watch Arsenic and Old Lace starring
Cary Grant. ; )
