I just found out that Jeff Simon, author of the Jake Shade series and primary co-author of the Death Choir series, died in November 2021.

I now know why he wasn't answering my email. Also I now know the meaning of the phrase "absolutely gutted".

I last talked with Jeff in early 2020; my first contact with him was sending him feedback on the first Jake Shade chapter he posted, back in I think 1995. He had started doing a complete rewrite of all the Jake Shade stories in the mid-2010s. It is a crying shame he was not able to finish that.

If ANYBODY has the FULL TEXT of Death Choir chapter 10 (Souls' Serenade), PLEASE let me know. I have the incomplete draft he sent me at the time, along with ALL the other Death Choir chapters and interludes, but I am missing quite a lot from the climax of the story. He later told me he had lost all his APDI-related writing (I had to send him my copies). The draft makes it clear what his plan was for the story's ending, but there's a lot missing. As I am listed in every DC post as a co-author I have the rights to republish the whole thing myself (since it meets the US Code definition of a joint work), and in Jeff's honor I am seriously considering doing that, but I would much prefer to have as much of Jeff's vision and writing incorporated as possible.

Also, in posting this, Darth Google helpfully informs me that "Effective February 22, 2024, Google Groups will no longer support new Usenet content." Thus passes the last easy mass-audience access to Usenet, and while Usenet itself has the feel of a zombie wasteland these days, this will definitely be the final nail in the coffin. That's okay, Google: I'm at the point where I don't really need your micromanagement, message control, and ad-pushing centered on my Gmail account anymore either, so we can part ways with finality.

This will serve as my last post to APDI, a place that had a far bigger impact on me than most of you know, and it is fitting that it be in honor of Jeff Simon, a man I loved like a brother.

I have pasted the obituary text below.

Kent,

My condolences on your loss.

While I don't recall either series from back in the day, it always pains me to hear of the loss of another author from the heyday of Generica.

Absent companions.
