I'm a chocolate deprived woman full of rage and I'm not afraid to use
it. ;)
1. Favorite place you've ever lived or visited - tell us about it.
And don't scrimp on the details!
2. Cooking for Papa on Wednesday, as usual. This week's menu? Well,
since you asked, we're having London Broil (flank steal) marinated in
garlic and olive oil with a little red pepper for some added zing,
along with herbed mashed potatoes (rosemary, a little garlic, coarse-
ground black pepper, and maybe a little parmesan cheese), sauteed
mushrooms, and fresh Silver Queen corn with butter. And nice buttery
yeast rolls. No, I don't cook like this every day anymore, so eating
it once a week won't kill me. What's the best thing you have planned
to cook for this week?
3. What's your current 'Can't miss it!' TV show? Why do you like it?
4. Do you have a new hobby? Or an old one you haven't told us about?
Liz has me hooked on making jewelry. It's very relaxing and lets me be
creative without having to think about it.
5. Been to the movies lately? What'd ya see? I have splurged hugely
and went twice in the past couple of weeks. Saw 'Knowing' and it was
pretty good. And saw 'Haunting in Connecticutt' yesterday. Some good
moments that made me jump (which Liz teased me about) and made Liz
want to sleep with me (which I denied, bwahahaha!)
6. What do you think about the state of the US economy? Are we on the
right track, or are we throwing good money after bad? Should the
government get out of the business of business and get back to
*governing*? How do you think Obama is doing?
7. Liz will be graduating in just over 2 months. I remember all those
years ago, Mama gave me an onyx ring with a diamond chip for
graduation. Daddy sent me a card, with my name spelled wrong. What was
the best thing you got?
8. Prom's coming up in a little over a month. For those of you
stateside, did you go? Did you make a whole big deal out of senior
prom? Do you have pictures to share? C'mon! We want to see 'em!
9. For those of you *not* stateside, did you have school dances or
anything like that? If so, did you go? What were they like?
10. What movie most closely resembles the time you spent in high
school (late teens)?
Okay, folks. That's it from me for now.
T
I'll reply to these when I get back from work, tonight.
Too many to choose from.

Probably couscous with plaice and vegetables (boiled in the
microwave). If yesterday can be considered then rice with lentils and
plaice.
> 3. What's your current 'Can't miss it!' TV show? Why do you like it?
Air Crash Investigations:
Three reasons for liking it:
1) I like programmes about investigations (especially where forensics
are involved),
2) I dream that one day I'd like to be a pilot so I like to think that
one day I could use the lessons from the programme to help me not make
the same mistake, and
3) Having an entire programme devoted to one air crash is the best
reassurance that flying is safe (hell, car accidents are so common
that they barely make it to the last item on the local news).

I can't think of one.

Been too busy with not enough money to watch films. The last film I
saw at the cinema was Mama Mia and both Julie and I loved that one.

I don't know enough about economics to answer. As I had to cover the
30s crash (seen from the European point of view) as part of my course
(it was a 1 term module) I am worried about the "buy American"
provision in the latest bail out. That said, Gordon Brown's statement
"British jobs for British workers" (last year I think) is worrying as
well.
From what I hear, Obama has made some mis-steps but we'll have to wait
and see to see if he can recover.

If you mean university, that was Years ago! If you mean secondary
school, we don't have a graduation ceremony here.

After my first year of uni' my school had a dance which I was still
eligible for. I remember that there was a band that played a lot of
music from the 50s and 60s.
> 10. What movie most closely resembles the time you spent in high

I can barely remember them.
My favorite place would have to be Mustang Island, Texas. It's at the
other end of Padre Island but doesn't get the spring breakers like
SOuth Padre does. It's fairly primitive - you drive out on the beach
and set up your tent or whatever. They do have portapots and showers
set up, but that's it. You are only feet from the ocean, and the
smell and the sound are balm to the soul.
This is where I want my ashes scattered after I die, and eventually
where I'll scatter Shay's as well (when I can bring myself to do it).

Our menu this week will be (with additions, as I think of them):
turkey roast and smashed hot potatoes, pork chops and mac'n'cheese,
sausage and baked beans.
> 3. What's your current 'Can't miss it!' TV show? Why do you like it?
Thanks to my DVR, I'm able to tape the ones I want and zip through the
commercials, so I have a list of shows - House, all the CSI's, all the
Law&Orders, Dollhouse, Scrubs - dang, I know I'm forgetting some.

We were going to go see 'Race to Witch Mountain' this weekend, but I'm
sick, so it got canceled.

I think he's doing a good job, considering the short amount of time
he's had to try to fix the last 8 years of screw-ups.

You'll laugh, but my best gift was a printing calculator - it used
this little roll of silver heat-sensitive paper, and was a wonder when
I was in school. I used it for years!

I went to 2 proms - my school was small enough that junior (11th
grade) and senior (12th grade) had their proms together. The first
year I went with my boyfriend Danny. We had pizza beforehand and had
a blast at the dance. My senior year, I went with a girlfriend, and
we went totally because we could. I wore tight black jeans with 4
inch heels, a Nehru jacket and beads. We had so much fun freaking out
the normals. *g*

There comes a time when you gotta take care of your own first. I think
probably that time is here.

Yes. Harper's Island. ;)
I *still* can't watch medical shows. Not even Scrubs, and I love that
one. Maybe I should sue the docs for loss of enjoyment or something.

I love the SC coast, from Cherry Grove to Charleston. But Savannah, GA
is my all-time favorite local. It has everything. Beautiful beaches
out on Tybee Island. Wonderful old architecture and history everywhere
you turn. Surprising bits of whimsy in hidden places. Amazingly
haunting cemeteries. Seafood, soul food, just good ol' southern food.
A sense of mystery and a bit of haughtiness, like a grand old southern
dame. :)
> 3. What's your current 'Can't miss it!' TV show? Why do you like it?
I watch American Idol and Harper's Island. Those are the only two I
can remember the times on, and I like them for the cheesy goodness.
I like stuff on Discovery and the History Channel and the Travel
Channel too, but I can never remember what's on when so I usually miss
'em.

It's still early in the game, but T is not a happy camper right now.

It was a big deal, and I went, and I have a picture. Only thing is,
photo dude snapped the shot just as I was licking my lips.

It'd have to be a cross between 10 Things I Hate About You and Fast
Times at Ridgemont High and The Breakfast Club.

Every time I think of an answer a little voice pops up and says, "How
about this other place?"

In the Depression, most experts agree that one of the contributing
factors was the trade wars that went on. One Government increased
tariffs to protect their home market (which works right up until the
point the countries affected take retaliatory action).
There's a game that models this very well. Have you ever heard of
Prisoner's Dilemma? Here's the set up and here are the rules of the
game:
Setup:
There's going to be a prison breakout. You can either co-operate or
defect (i.e. sell your fellow prisoner to the guards).
Rules:
2 people are placed so they can't see what the other person has
written and, when the judge tells them to, they write down whether to
co-operate or defect. The judge then compares the results.
Scoring:
Both Co-operate: Both get 2 points
Both Defect: Both get 1 point
1 Co-operates and 1 Defects: Defector gets 4 points, Co-operator gets
1
What's important for world trade is the scoring system. Yes, you
would get a short term boost by increasing barriers to other
countries' trade but, just as in Prisoner's Dilemma, the moment
another country imposes trade barriers against you you lose (whether
or not you have trade barriers against the other one).
This is because, now more than in the 30s, no country is self-
sufficient so NEEDS to be able to import products/services from other
countries and NEEDS to be able to export their products/services as
well. Not only that but imposing trade barriers (and it doesn't have
to be formal tariffs) on other countries invites them to impose them
on you.

Whenever I feel something is about to happen I remind myself of an old
saying "A week is a long time in politics."

mid-30s.
Once the scores are totalled the players play again.

The point I, and lots of economists make, is that if Government policy
enacts that sentiment it ends up hurting the people they claim they're
taking care of.

One thing that I won't forgive is attacking rights and freedoms but,
for just about everything else, I reserve my judgement on any
Government until I see how their policies work out in practice.
Thanks, hon. It's gotten a lot easier over the last 2 years, and like
I said in my livejournal - I don't mind carrying it around with me
now.

What can I say? Geeky-cool was the best thing I could hope for back
then. You know, the only reason I quit using it was because I
couldn't buy the little rolls of paper any more. Oh! And it would
print out a calendar for whatever month you wanted, from 01-01-00
until ... like infinity. SO COOL!

I'm sure Mom took some at the time but they've disappeared over the
last 25... uhm, or more ... years. The only reason I could pull that
off was that I weighed about 120 pounds back then, most of it in my
boobs and fanny and it was the early 80s. *G*

I want to see this place. I promised Beverlee that I would some day.
Would you say its too far to drive from Atlanta?
sharon
likes to plan, even if its very far ahead
Sounds like the poifect opportunity for a road trip to me!
TC
Eggsactly.
I know you don't drive (unless you've learned in the last few years)
but would you say driving in the States is easier than the UK? (amount
of traffic, speed of traffic, courteousness of drivers, ease of
understanding the law etc).
Nah. It's about 4 hours, and almost all of it is interstate. If you
really wanted to see some of the country you could take back roads
instead. It'd probably add about an hour to your travel time but would
be more interesting than I-16.
Why Atlanta, if I can be so nosy?
> sharon
> likes to plan, even if its very far ahead
I'm telling ya, we all need to get together and rent a really big
house in Myrtle Beach one of these days. Easy drive to Charleston and
Savannah from there.

It is! I'm totally sold, though. And last night, I initially said it
would be Hunter that got it. Then I changed my mind and said the
stepmother instead. Arrgh!

Its the nearest international hub, plus I'd probably stay overnight
and visit the Atlanta Paranormal Society just because I watch their tv
show.

I'd be in for that, would probably be cheaper in the long run but it
would have to be in the late October period because its the cheapest
time for flights. All pie in the sky at this point though. Maybe we
will get to talk about it seriously at some point.
Ya know I've been saying this for nearly 10 years, god I feel like
such a procrastinator, but everything needs to be right. When the
money is there the situation isn't right and vice versa. Bleh, I wanna
win the lottery, or grow some selfishness to just say balls I'm going
sod the consequences.
sharon
Where would you be flying from? It can be well worth checking out other
airports for different carriers. You may be able to get closer to where you
wanna be in one hop instead of having to go to Atlanta and then drive. From
Manchester, using BMI, you could fly into Chicago, or using US, you could
fly into Philly. I think someone like Delta might fly into NY? I've done
Philly and then down to Charlotte a couple times, and Chicago down to
Charlotte, too.
And come on! It *has* been about 10 years! Borrow some money from the bank
and go on a trip!! Treat yourself!
Its all a little bit slower, and the roads are a lot wider for the most
part. That whole left turn/right turn thing is a bit weird, and you really
have to watch for filtering, but honestly? I'd say its a bit easier!

Surely Philadelphia and Chicago are further away from Savannah than
Atlanta? Oh I see, you mean get a connecting flight, uhm... as I'd
want a car to do the tourist thing anyway the drive isnt a problem,
its only like driving from here to London (about 250 miles on motorway/
A roads). Charlotte is an option but it doesn't have many direct
flights from the UK and Raleigh is just as far as Atlanta (or so it
looks on a map).
> And come on! It *has* been about 10 years! Borrow some money from the bank
> and go on a trip!! Treat yourself!
Its not a money issue. I have money enough to cover the trip. Its more
of a moral issue; one of my dogs is 18 years old (actually he's Jons
dog) and Jon doesn't want to go and leave him with someone/kennels
because he's convinced he will think we've abandoned him and die. I
cant say I blame him for not wanting that to happen, he's had the dog
since he was a puppy (which is funnily enough 18 years). So we wait
for the annoying old bastard... err I mean lovely old thing to pop his
clogs, which tbh wont be that far off. I'm surprised he's lasted as
long as he has (just to spite me I'm sure ;-).

doesn't go on holiday in the UK either for the same reasons.
I've never had an issue getting into Charlotte - there are tons of
connecting flights throughout the day - Road trip, though, is a lot of fun.
And I wouldn't rush it either. 250 miles isn't that far, but it nice to be
able to split it up and stop off in interesting places (and there are loads
of these! - You never know what you're gonna find around the next corner)
and maybe even stop off for the night somewhere.
I think as far as direct flights go, you can only get to Charlotte from a
couple of the London airports, even though it is a hub for US airways.

Is true though!
I love him to pieces but I'm pretty sure he's going to out live me.
sharon
Well, obviously he takes after his "dad", doesn't he? Sheer orneriness :-)
