Freud was afraid that psychoanalysis would become a "Jewish science".
From the beginning he was surrounded by Jews, almost exclusively, and
he was often very cruel toward them. Several of his followers, among
them Silberer, committed suicide after having been ostracized by him.
Freud said things that were downright antisemitic. Deirdre Bair gives an
example:
"Once [Jung and Freud] boarded ship, tensions simmered further. Freud
caused a scene when he spotted Jung engaged in animated conversion with
the philosophy professor William Stern, who relied heavily on Jung's use
of word association tests [...] Freud brought their conversation to an
abrupt end by shouting at Jung: 'Sit down with me! Bad company ruins
good manners!' Later, and with evident satisfaction, Freud recorded in
his travel diary that 'the shabby Jew [the distinguished Professor
Stern]...in embarrassment departed.'" (Bair, Jung, p.162)
