It depends on a few other factors:
What are your major concerns about your habit? Wasting time,
wasting money, worried about being caught? Or what?
Are you married or single?
....For if you are married or in a significant relationship with
a sexual partner, you could conceivably be risking a breakup if
they find out.
What sort of pornography?
Just because it is available on the net, it doesn't mean that it
is "legal" to download it, or "possess" it.
Laws vary widely even from state to state in the USA, even more
from country to country.
In the country I'm posting from, the only thing that is really
"illegal" is child pornography, involving "underage" subjects.
..... Although there is no precise definition of "underage",
actually. Depends on location. Even within the USA, the
"age of consent" and "permissible sex acts" differ widely from
state to state.
In general, though, from what I've read in the news, there
is an increasing worldwide crackdown on "child pornography", even
possession of Internet downloads.
Your home computer probably has more of a record of sites visited
than you probably believe. In any case, it is possibly or even
likely that your service provider maintains a record. If you pay
for any downloads by credit card, even another source of
evidence.
What is "legal" to download depends on where you are. If you are
not downloading child porn, possibly, or even probably, no
hassle. Hard to say, though!
In much of the world, anything except child pornography is
probably legal.
When I was a kid, it was fairly common for parents to photograph
naked children in the bath, on a rug, etc.
Today, such photos might be of questionable legality, especially
if the parents displayed them to others, or, worse yet, gave
copies away or tried to sell them.
Of course, laws also change with time. Take the unrelated area
of possible weapons. Forty years ago no one worried what
someone took aboard an airliner. No one was worried about
kids carrying scout knives at school, in public, or anywhere
else.
Not today, though, at least in some states.
Many states or countries have laws against carrying concealed
weapons.
So what is a "weapon"? Almost anything can be. What counts is
the opinion of the arresting officer, and if it comes to that,
the judge and jury.
Much the same applies to pornography. There is no agreed
general definition.
Any state or country can pass any laws they want.
Or take drugs as another example: In one U.S. state,
possession or use of marijuana might result in a warning, or a
small fine. In another, it could involve years in prison, or
even death.
Allowable sexual behavior between married couples? Again, can
depend on the state.
Not that I am implying that you have any interest in child porn
on the Internet or otherwise, but some readers may, and they
should be aware that it can land them in loads of trouble.
As to your particular problem, if it is seriously bothering you,
seek out professional help.
