Locally, here north of Seattle, we are having Very Hot Weather. At
least for us. Up into the 80s.
Got home this afternoon, restarted computer (it had gotten shut
down this morning - "wrong" batch file.) Got the "amber screen of
death" - yeah, I dunno either. BSOD, and the new GSOD - but this was
new. Couldn't reach New.west.earthlink.net. Rebooted.
No {random color}SOD. rah. Download headers, and then the bodies
on watch list. Then try to grab a few more bodies and send the
responses. Nope - can't reach the server. Have lunch, turn on fan,
get s few things done in the yard, come back - alles good.
I dunno - I just blame the heat.|

Also, there hasn't been anything posted here fro months. And of
course, the website is less than helpful.

Have fun, keep the shiney side up.

Yea, I couldn't connect to these since yesterday:
nntp.earthlink.net
news.west.earthlink.net
news.east.earthlink.net

However, earthlink.us.supernews.com worked. I wonder what's going on. Is
ELN trying to dump its NNTP service? Better keep its 216.168.4.170
address just in case! :(

Yoicks.

I was able to get to tech support on May 17th "Tech support is working
on it". Okay.

But still nothing as of this morning.

I use news.west.earthlink.net and have had no trouble.

What is the nature of the failure? Can't get an address? No route?

I did have some trouble a while back which turned out to be the result
of a change in the monthly data limit. For some reason they started
resetting the counter on the 16th of the month rather than the 1st.

I contacted customer service and never got an answer from them. I had to
start recording my usage to figure it out. I also discovered the answer
to another question I had asked: when does the approaching data limit
email get sent? It turns out that happens at about 25GB.

I'm using forte Agent to connect

"Unable to find address of server news.west.earthlink.net"

Which is weird, because an hour ago, using an XP laptop at the Y
I was able to post two messages.

Why I can't connect via the computer at home, I do not know.

It sounds like a DNS problem. I disabled the automatic DNS lookup on my
DSL modem/router and setup static IPs. The first is Google at 8.8.8.8
and the second is an Earthlink DNS.

Perhaps that is why it is working for me.

I just entered this address: 216.168.4.170

Works fine. Why? I don't know, he's on third, and I don't give a
darn!

Do that, I switched to that address - it started working right off
the bat.

Weirdness.

The old addresses seem to be working now for me, but I will keep the new one.

It is a problem with the Earthlink DNS system. Compare doing a lookup
using the Google DNS:

$ host news.west.earthlink.net 8.8.8.8
Using domain server:
Name: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53
Aliases:

news.west.earthlink.net is an alias for nntp.earthlink.net.
nntp.earthlink.net is an alias for earthlink.vsrv-sjc.supernews.net.
earthlink.vsrv-sjc.supernews.net is an alias for
earthlink.us.supernews.com.
earthlink.us.supernews.com has address 216.168.4.170

To one using the Earthlink DNS:

$ host news.west.earthlink.net 207.69.188.186
Using domain server:
Name: 207.69.188.186
Address: 207.69.188.186#53
Aliases:

Host news.west.earthlink.net not found: 2(SERVFAIL)

When I try that I get:

$ host news.west.earthlink.net 207.69.188.186
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Aka, Earthlink turned off their DNS system. I received an email several
weeks ago telling me:
