Earthlink personal web pages have been down since Thursday. I first
noticed when the ftp server refused a connection when I tried to upload
some new data.

Accessing the pages just redirects to a page stating that the data is
being migrated.

When I contacted customer support Friday they stated that there was some
maintenance going on and it would be completed Monday.

When I called Monday they said they were aware of and working on the
problem. No estimate this time of when it would be back.

I am beginning to suspect the answer to that is never. I stumbled onto
an item in an Earthlink FAQ stating that the free web space was no
longer part of the service for new customers starting in 2018.

They keep reducing the S in ISP.

They don't even mention it in its own
https://support.earthlink.net/contact/outages.php web page. :(

I have complained about that twice now.

I know your frustrations since I had to deal with its usenet service in
the past. Argh.

Yes. I meant its third party NSP. Actually, SuperNews sold to GigaNews. ;)

3rd party NSP with (Super/Giga)News. I'm surprised we still have it.
Enjoy while it lasts! :(

Ugh. I was thinking of downgrading my $9.95 dial-up account to e-mail
only, but then I would lose NSP access. Argh.

Suddenly, I hate Earthlink, or their new robot overlords.

I just received an email about the website "migration". It says:

"Your personalized free website migration is complete and your site is
now only viewable. As of March 31, 2020, your personalized website will
be removed and no longer accessible. "

In other words they have terminated the web space with no warning. I
have some pages that update every day but not anymore.

Of course when I try to view my pages the server can't find them. But
that is an improvement over no connection at all.

I searched to see what options I have for an ISP and found none. There
is AT&T and Spectrum but all they do is provide an Internet connection
costing more than what I pay now. Where did all the ISPs go?

Unless you've typoed your note, they've given
you a year's worth of warning.

With the discloser that I used to work there,
the very ancient (in Internet years) ISP "panix.com"
is still very much in existence.

They started off as dial up, but are now very, very,
much into the providing of back end services - including
web pages and e-mail (plus lots of other stuff), for
people coming in via other internet links. Like, oh,
a cable connection in Kansas.

They're a business and do charge. The basic fee, which
includes webpage at "panix.com/~[yourname]" is $10/month,
$100 for a prepaid year.

If you want it under your own domain, they offer that,
plus lots of other stuff, too.

Again, I used to work there. Still a very happy customer

(A big bunch of people formerly at Netcom moved over
to Panix when Netcom crashed. Ditto for quite a
few other ISPs)

Strange, I've been hating them for the past fifteen years or so.
What took you so long?

When Earthlink raped the Netcom shell service and dumped all of the Netcom
customers abruptly after lying to them for a year or so, a lot of the
folks moved to Panix and to Eskimo. I cannot say anything about Eskimo
but I am a Panix customer and have nothing but good things to say about
them.

You got lucky. I wonder how long ELN will keep its third party NSP
option for us. If they ever drop it, no more ELN for me.

You have a funny idea of what constitutes a warning. I have not had FTP
access since 7 March and it will not be returning.

How did news get into this?

(Web pages available until March 2020, maybe, but will never be updated
again.
Thanks Earthlink.)

I was occasionally displeased but this pushed me over the edge.

I looked at Panix and all I see is some dialup access. No DSL or
anything resembling high speed access. Did I miss it?

This is what I am getting:

$ ftp ftp-www.earthlink.net
Trying 209.86.60.23...
ftp: connect to address 209.86.60.23Connection timed out
Trying 209.86.60.22...
ftp: connect: Connection refused
ftp> quit

I received another copy of the email claiming that the migration was
complete today. Yet I still can't see my pages. Results vary. Sometimes
I get an Earthlink page saying the page couldn't be found and sometimes
Firefox can't connect.

I tried something different today and I think I know part of what went
wrong. It appears that sometime since the 7th when I tried to access
some pages the Earthlink server threw up a bogus 301 "Permanently moved"
error. Browsers remember that and take the permanently part seriously.
But since the redirect happens out of sight, you never know about it.
Normally used to switch http to https.

in Firefox you can clear that by right clicking on the entry in history
and selecting "Forget about this site". That cleared up the failure to
connect errors but not the page not found errors.

I also received a phone message today from "Executive Relations"
(apparently a title with zero authority) claiming that they found that
my data at ~david.schultz was corrupted with malware or viruses and
would never be restored. (Even the HTML?) Which means that they took the
word of some useless virus scanner. I consider it equally likely that
they just lost the data and settled on this excuse to cover their asses.

Same for me from 2 different non-ELN ISPs:
$ ftp
ftp> open ftp-www.earthlink.net
ftp: connect to address 209.86.60.22: Connection refused
Trying 209.86.60.23...

$ ftp ftp-www.earthlink.net
Trying 209.86.60.22...
ftp: connect to address 209.86.60.22Connection refused
Trying 209.86.60.23...
