So, I have to use a free third party server (news.neodome.net). :(

I find it interesting that its new support web site
(https://help.earthlink.net) doesn't mention NNTP, usenet, and
newsgroups. All old locations are gone. I hope EarthLink didn't
terminate its newsgroup feature for us, old members. :(

I wasted an hour of my time yesterday talking to customer support. The phone tree options of course had nothing appropriate (although cancel service is looking better). They of course had no clue what usenet was but were able to turn up the Earthlink FAQ. He did finally escalate to the next level and I may get a call back. Monday.

The new support web page mentions that chat is an option but damned if I ever saw that link.

Given how Earthlink handled tearing down the personal web space it wouldn't surprise me if they handled terminating their giganews deal the same way. Or perhaps they just forgot to pay the bill.

Yep. Nothing new. I hope they didn't kill it. This is the reason why I'm
still a subscriber. It's cheap!

I was muttering about downgrading to just dial up for email/web
browsing, and getting my own subscription to Usenet. But I'm afraid
they would screw that up too.

Anyway, once it was Monday in India, they could get to restoring
service.

What do you have now? I always had dial-up. I can't downgrade to e-mail account only
or else I will lose it! :(

Wait, EarthLink outsourced everyone to India? If so, then they have a huge COVID panademic right now too. :( Anyways, the access is back. Whew. :)

I switch to "free range" DSL years ago (no phone line required).
For another 20 a month, I saved 70 bucks by not having a land line
(which was only used for dial-up).
When I married, I kept the account, even as I access the Interwebs
via my wife's ISP. It isn't worth the hassle to try and roll back,
and as long as the access to the newsgroups continue I'm content with
it.

Whether they have or not, they've outsourced it to someone.

Now, why am I having this mental image of a call center in
California, where all the techies have been through accent
normalization classes to learn to speak like they are from New Delhi.

Well, it can be any non-US countries like Philippines.

I wonder sometimes if They(tm) still hire any actual computer geeks, or have they been phasing them out due to diversity quotas?

I whined at customer support again yesterday. Providing the ticket
number from last month so they might have a chance of figuring out the
problem faster.

I suspect that their Lizard Overlords (aka the private equity firm that
bought Earthlink) have been shedding those expensive employees that know
things along with the domain name servers they shut down recently.

Yeah, I am going to predict that it will go down again for each new
month. I also asked for outage credit like in the past. I hope they
don't say no this time.

I received a call from level 2 support this evening and asked if this
was going to be a regular thing. No good answer to that. "Lionel's"
headset or whatever was pretty horrible as the audio level varied so
much I caught maybe one word in three. Maybe there was some useful
information in what he said but I missed it.

I will not be surprised when I get another NNTP 481 error on 1 July.

Yep. I also asked for an outage credit again. At first, they
refused and offered adding more e-mails for free. I was like I
don't use that e-mail addresses. And then, I got the outage credit.
Sheesh. I am going to keep asking for credits for every dang
outages!

It happened again this morning. I whined at customer service again. I
don't know if it helped but I can log in now without getting a "481
