Does this from
https://support.earthlink.net/articles/tools/earthlink-newsgroups-faq.php
cover the issue ?

"Why can I no longer access Newsgroups?

Newsgroup access is limited to customers who opened accounts prior to
December 2013. If you have closed and reopened your account recently,
you will have lost access to Newsgroups. You can also lose access to
Newsgroups for violations of the Acceptable Use Policy or by
attempting to circumvent monthly bandwidth limits. "

I've been getting "invalid username or password" for a couple of days
now too. I tried changing my password but the server still won't
accept it.

nntp.earthlink.net actually maps to 216.168.3.70
earthlink.us.supernews.com since earthlink currently contracts with
them for usenet, but EL doesn't provide much support or assistance for
it any more. If you hear anything from them, please post it.

I have been with Earthlink for 12 years. I finally got a tech person that
knew what newsgroup are. Looking through my account he found that I changed
the password on the newsgroup email account. That is what got it cut off. I
told him I was getting a lot of spam on the account was the reason I told
hem if I didn't get newsgroups back I would be droping Earthlink as my
internet provider. He said he would send the message to top level. I'll
wait and see. He said it might take 3 days for a return call.

Wow, changing your account password caused that? That's not good. Please
keep us posted.

I got my earthlink news groups back today. If you have had Earthlink news
groups before 2/13 and lost your connection, all it takes is any king of
change you make to your connection. What I did was change my pass word and
that in turn changed my connection to their newsgroup provider. In the
future I'll contact support and let them make changes if needed.

You have to get Earthlink tech support to change the password. You have to
keep pushing until you get to the person that can do it

Thanks. It's nice to know this is fixable if you're persistent, but it
may not be worth it for me because I change passwords too often.

Create an email account specificately for newsgroups and have Earthlink
change your newsgroup to that email and then don't ever change it again, but
let Earthlink change it if you start getting spam on it. That is what I was
told by the tech person that finally got me back on line,

So, old password doesn't work on nntp.earthlink.net after changing the
password?

It didn't for me. My account was blcked until I finally got someone at
Earthlink that knew what the problem was and corrected it. Just changing the
password locks the account. Making any kind of change to yur news group
access will block it. Final word - DON'T make any changes to your EL
newsgroup account. If you need to make a change have them do it.

The price increase turned newsgroups off for me,

The second (Third?) level support just turned newsgroups back on.

There are lots of triggers that cut you off so unless you did something to
change the account, ask for them to be turned on again.

The silver lining for me is that I discovered that DSL 3.0 Mbps is the same
price as DSL 1.5 Mbps. YMMV If I can get a good quote for the final price of
DSL 6.0 Mbps I may go that route.

I was getting spam on my email address used on newsgroups and changed it.
That is what turned them off. I complained long and hard enough that I will
not go through a long delay again if they are turned off. I'll start with
someone that knows what newsgroups are.

Interesting. That sucks. It looks like that old URL is broken too since
it is now at
https://support.earthlink.net/articles/dialup/newgroups-and-usenet-frequently-asked-questions.php
... I also noticed they finally updated it too like 35 GB per month per
ACCOUNT. It used to be 5 GB per e-mail address. :/

Hi,

I am about to switch from DSL to Cable having rejected HyperLink.

Is this considered a closing and reopened an account?

When I order that will be one of my questions.
