It is a problem with the Earthlink DNS system. Compare doing a lookup
using the Google DNS:

$ host news.west.earthlink.net 8.8.8.8
Using domain server:
Name: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53
Aliases:

news.west.earthlink.net is an alias for nntp.earthlink.net.
nntp.earthlink.net is an alias for earthlink.vsrv-sjc.supernews.net.
earthlink.vsrv-sjc.supernews.net is an alias for earthlink.us.supernews.com.
earthlink.us.supernews.com has address 216.168.4.170

To one using the Earthlink DNS:

$ host news.west.earthlink.net 207.69.188.186
Using domain server:
Name: 207.69.188.186
Address: 207.69.188.186#53
Aliases:

Host news.west.earthlink.net not found: 2(SERVFAIL)

I spoke with a tier 2 customer service drone today and it was pretty
clear he had no clue. I am not even sure he understood what a DNS server
is supposed to do.

[sighs] I am not surprised. :( Does this still happen on EarthLink's own
network like on dial-up? I don't have copper phone lines to try it on my
dial-up modems.

This evening when I tested the Earthlink DNS it finally admitted to
knowing about news.west.earthlink.net

I wonder how long that will last?

I am not going to change the settings on my DSL modem/router back to
automatically configuring the DNS. Google remains as my primary.

I use OpenDNS' and Google's. EarthLink is sure to resolve these usenet issues.
