A Long Island mall appearance by the 15-year-old pop singer Justin Bieber,
below, ended in minor injuries and one arrest after fans became unruly, The
Associated Press reported. Some 3,000 people had gathered for the Friday
afternoon event at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, N.Y., but
pushing and shoving broke out, and the police ordered the crowd to disperse.
"People started screaming, 'Justin!' " 13-year-old Aimee Macchi, who was
knocked to the ground, told The A.P. "And they ran forward, and the ropes
collapsed." The news service said five people were sent to a hospital with
minor injuries. James Roppo, a vice president of Island Def Jam Records,
which is releasing Mr. Bieber's first album, "My World," this week, was
charged with endangering the welfare of children and obstructing
governmental administration for refusing to send a Twitter message asking
the crowd to disperse. Mr. Bieber posted his own Twitter message to fans,
saying that the police would not allow him to enter the building, and that
they had threatened to arrest him if he did not leave. Island Records later
apologized to fans in a written statement.
