July 7 (Bloomberg) -- Late payments on home-equity loans rose to a
record in the first quarter as 18 straight months of job losses and a
slumping economy left more borrowers unable to pay their debts, the
American Bankers Association reported.
Delinquencies on home-equity loans climbed to 3.52 percent of all
accounts from 3.03 percent in the fourth quarter, and late payments on
home-equity lines of credit climbed to a record 1.89 percent, the
group reported today. An index of eight types of loans rose for a
fourth straight quarter, to 3.23 percent from 3.22 percent in October
through December, the group said.
“The number one driver of delinquencies is job losses, which we’ve
seen build and build,” James Chessen, the group’s chief economist,
said in a telephone interview. “Delinquencies won’t come down without
a dramatic improvement in the economy and businesses will have to
start hiring again.”

You really should try to keep up with who you're replying to.

We have a home equity line for emergencies only. It's nice to know
there is a big chunk of money available hassle-free should we need it,
but we haven't had such an emergency yet. I guess we were lucky...we
were both raised by debt-adverse parents. We have no debt, not even a
mortgage. Lots of people use their credit line to pay for cars,
vacations, etc and these are often people who haven't even paid their
mortgage off yet! I have a difficult time feeling sorry for them. We
did without at times, because the debt was our priority.

I irritated my brother on the 4th by asserting that next year the
price
of gasoline won't go up in late spring/early summer then down in the
fall but
rather the rise in price will be a bit later and smaller but will
continue
to inch up through the fall. I hope our electorate is wising up to
these

My pension is the same, increased a fair bit in fact...does that every
year.
I have no debt whatsoever. I have no mortgage. The 'value' of my house
means nothing; it's where I live, and as it is not for sale, the price
is irrelevent.
I have no credit card. I deal in cash, always have done. If this is
'Hard Times', then long may they continue. Shop prices are lower, yet
my income is higher.
So, be 'sorry' for whatever you like. It's nonsense. Happily, I don't
heed financial advice from so-called experts like you.

Someone with common sense. It was good to read, Jane. I too, hate
debt, so don't have any. If I want something, I wait until I can
afford to buy it. If I can't afford it, I don't buy it.
Credit has always been a huge trap; use it, and whatever you are
buying costs more. Offer cash and it often enough costs less.
Let those who incur debt suffer for their greed.

I was brought up that way too, Jane. If I wanted it, I had to work for
it. When I had completed sufficient work, then I could buy it.
Andy Pandy want's to 'burn Bankers' and has lain the cause of economic
troubles at Banks who have lent money.
Their's is just an industry, they 'sell' money in the form of credit
and compete against one-another.
I lay as much blame, more in fact, on the millions of people who buy
things they cannot afford, who sign credit aggreements and very often
know they cannot re-pay.
I would quite like a private Jet. If a 'Banker' agreed to let me
borrow the money for one, then I am the criminal for accepting that
offer when, of course, I could never repay the sum or the interest for
that matter.
It's not the Banker that should be 'Burned'. It's the 'Borrower'.

You don't have to. Historical election results are what they are. In
1980, the Republicans made big gains in Congress after Jimmy Carter's
disastrous presidency. But they lost seats in 1982 because the economy
was still struggling. If you and Rush are right about Obama making the
economy worse, the Democrats will lose a substantial number of seats
in 2010.

I needed calming...Thank you, and Steven too. Oddly enough it's
Madison (Danielle's eldest) birthday today. She is four. Time passes
so quickly.
She told me this afternoon how much today means to her, and right now
she is having a Birthday party in her flat. A very young woman with
three children, going through a divorce after as awkward and difficult
teen-age period imaginable. Yet a young woman who learned this week
that she has passed her Degree in Law...may now be addresed as
'Maitre'...about the most difficult Degree to obtain in France.
Not enough for Danielle, she still want's me to be proud of her, and
her high marks are good enough for her to be accepted for a further
three/six year course in order to become a Judge d'Instruction.
In legal terms, that's about as powerful a position as one could wish
for. I do no more than keep a distant watchful eye on her. She does
everything to live up to my standards, and I am proud when she tells
me that she is driven to succeed in life only through my example
I am as protective of her now, as I was when she was a vulnerable four
year old herself.
She has done this all by herself...and I am as proud as any father
could ever be.
