I just saw a press release that Friday Smackdown is moving from CW to
SyFy. Which I already knew. But I thought it would go in the old
Monday slot that used to carry wrestling. I did not know is that they
are putting it at Friday. Stupid.

For over ten years now that slot has been "Sci-Fi Prime" or "Sci-Fi
Friday" so they could run shows like Sliders, Lexx, Farscape, Stargate
SG1, Atlantis, Universe, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, and so on.
Now they are turning their prime real estate into wrestling, which
will drive-away their main SF-loving audience (types that enjoy using
their brains rather than turning them off).

I've heard of shows "jumping the shark" but this is the first time
I've ever seen a whole channel jump the shark.
.

Oh my god! They killed Sci-Fi!
You bastards!

Where have you been sleeping the last few months. This is really old news.

Tuesday is the new sci-fi night.

On a beach. It was summer.

They did that a LONG time ago.

Yes.

It is simply breathtaking to watch the glee and abandon with which
the liberal media and the Angry Left have been attempting to turn

for them, it's failing.

Considering that most professional wrestling is fantasy/staged anyway, ....

I notice you changed the group from scfi.channel to
alt.tv.channels.syfy - There's no such group according to Google.

True but it's "stupid" fantasy where you turn-off your brain while
watching. TNT tried to schedule Babylon 5 and Wrestling back-to-back,
and it didn't work. The B5 audience would watch until wrestling came
on, and then switch off. Likewise wrestling fans did not watch B5 as
TNT hoped they would.

Completely different audiences, and it seems likely Syfy will see the
same results TNT did. Syfy is damaging its brand by scaring off their
primary audience.on Friday nights. They will go watch something else.

And since most wrestlers owe a great deal to the "science" of modern
pharmacology.

My wife's grandfather was a professional wrestler in West Texas
back in the 30s. He used to say that a "real" wrestling match
wouldn't last 30 seconds. However, I met him when he was 82
(I was 21) and he could beat me in arm wrestling. And I had an
inch and 40 lbs on him.

I wrestled in high school and junior college for one year. Matches were
three minutes and you were exhausted when they were over. As a gag, we
started the "Greco-Roman" wrestling club in high school so we'd have an
excuse to head down to the Olympic Auditorium in L.A. to watch wrestling
(it was a school night and this was a "school sponsored field trip," so
we got away with it). This was 1962 so it was at the tail end of the
1950s hey-day with guys like Freddy Blassie, Antonio "Argentina" Rocca,
"Lord" John Blears, Mr. Moto, Gorgeous George, and the rest of that
colorful crew.

Here's what I saw from ringside. It's 100% fake, with a lot of pretty
funny theatrics, but those guys (even back then before all the weight
training) were serious jocks. You're bouncing around the ring for five
minutes, then you've got to pick up some guy who weighs as much as you
do and throw him to the canvas? You've got to be an athlete. And some
of the guys we watched were not young. When I saw Freddie Blassie ("You
pencil neck geek!") pick up Baron Michele Leone, walk around the ring
with him held overhead, he was 45 years old.

Years later I got a tour of one of the rings, and saw how everything was
put together. How they have a huge amount of padding on the turnbuckles
so when heads are smashed into them it's like hitting a cushion. How
they have a hydraulic shock absorber in the center of the ring so when a
guy gets slammed to the canvas, the floor absorbs a lot of the force.
How one guy "ally oops" himself up onto the other guy's shoulder, etc.
But like knockabout comics in Vaudville fifty years early, or some
clowns in the circus, these guys were in amazing shape.

Anyway, off the tangent. This may be fantasy and it may be theater and
I don't watch it, but as an ex-high school wrestler I can tell you I
wouldn't want to get into a serious throwdown with any of those guys.

Best,R.E.F.

Google is not the authority on Usenet groups.

"alt.tv.channels.syfy" is listed at ISC's list of groups. It was created
over a year ago when the channel changed its name:

2009-07-13 23:10:02 [29790] ACTION: newgroup alt.tv.channels.syfy y

There is no "alt.tv.scifi.channel" anymore because there is no "sci-fi
channel" anymore. Obviously, your news service has not kept up.

The newsgroup still exists and there are still new posts that are
showing up in it.

Don't mind D.Stussy; he's power mad. Just laugh.

Also, the newsgroup for the syfy channel was started (not created;
D.Stussy doesn't understand things) by someone to make fun of the new
name. In other words, it's a revenge group. Few request creation of those.
