Seems to me tahat they just disappared with no warning or explanation.

From what I remember, they quit because of a big problem with
spammers using their service.

That's pretty much what happened.
As I understand it the LCS remailer was hosted in the computer
science department at MIT. Yes, *that* MIT. It was more of an
ongoing class project than anything else, and students in current
years had simply lost interest. Or perhaps they forgot about it
completely.
LCS was way past its end of life anyway. There had to have been so
many different operators over the years that security was abysmal.
Rubbish. Spam has never been a real problem for remailers. They're
not particularly suited to the sort of bombardment tactics spammers
use, and there's far too many willing, shady providers out there in
jurisdictions where spam is tolerated. It's far more efficient and
productive to spam through "normal" channels.
