From all the books and other stuff I have read about the Roman Empire, I have
to disagree, at least based on what I read.
Romans who travelled had to have armed retainers, and carried arms themselves.
I even doubt if the streets of the capitol were safe at night. I am betting

MURPHYSBORO, IL
A southern Illinois man was shot and killed Tuesday in a vicious
attack in Saudi Arabia. Authorities are still trying to figure out why the
unknown gunman killed 62-year-old Robert Jacobs of Murphysboro.
Jacobs' mother says she's pretty frustrated right now because of
conflicting reports on why Robert may have been killed. Oma Lee
Jacobs says her son has worked the last seven years in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia, for a contracting company. O ma Lee says the
latest reports she's received claim an unknown gunman followed
Robert home and then shot him nine times in the head.
This is the second deadly attack on a western person in Saudi
Arabia within the last three days.
"We talked about how dangerous it was over there, but I don't
think he had any inclination as to just how dangerous it was, or
that he would ever die over there. I always worried about him,
and it was very dangerous," said Oma Lee Jacobs.
Oma Lee says her son loved his job very much, and he also
enjoyed traveling in the Middle East. Before living in Saudi
Arabia, Robert worked at Southern Illinois University and
was very active in the Murphsyboro Methodist church.
One of his two sons and his mother still live in Murphysboro.
The family also says it's frustrating right now for them because
they can't get much information from overseas, and it's hard
to make any funeral plans right now.
