2.Drug dealer 'was not killed by republicans'
By Aeneas Bonner

REPUBLICAN sources last night ruled out IRA involvement in the murder of
leading drug dealer Brendan 'Speedy' Fegan, who was gunned down in a
Newry pub on Sunday.

Fegan (24) was shot repeatedly in the head and body by two disguised
gunmen who burst into the crowded Hermitage Bar in Canal Street on
Sunday afternoon.

Eye-witnesses said Fegan's last words had been "It's the provies, it's
the provies" as he saw two men approach him with handguns.

But republican sources said yesterday Fegan had not actively been under
any death threat from the IRA, and was more likely to have been killed
by rival drug gangs.

It emerged that he had been ordered to leave Newry around five years
ago, following damage caused to a large number of parked cars at a Derry
v Down GAA match in the Marshes.

Sources insisted however that no-one has been ordered out of Newry
during the IRA ceasefires, and said Fegan had freely visited the town on
regular occasions.

Sinn Fein council chairman Brendan Curran yesterday also ruled out
republican involvement, pointing to rival drug gangs as the most
probable suspects.

"Despite sensational media reports there is absolutely no evidence to
link republicans to the killing of Brendan Fegan," Mr Curran said.

"He was a well-known drug dealer and numerous attempts had been made on
his life before. It is widely acknowledged that he had numerous enemies
from within a variety of criminal gangs."

Meanwhile, it was reported yesterday that Fegan had links with the gang
that murdered Dublin investigative journalist Veronica Guerin three
years ago.

Dublin security sources revealed he was closely associated with leading
figures in the drugs trade in Republic, and had been held and questioned
in 1997 by Irish detectives investigating Ms Guerin's death.

The gang behind the shooting had imported more than IR£7m worth of
cannabis into the Republic over a two-year period from 1994, and Fegan
was thought to have been a major distributor in Northern Ireland.

It was also claimed yesterday that Fegan was working with police on both
sides of the border, and may have been targeted by suspicious rival
dealers following a number of prominent Garda seizures.

ROFLOL, kind of self serving to report that you were not involved, isn't it?

It is expected, it is a strange dance we do, if one does not issue a
statement denying things one is regarded as the perpetrator here. I've
no idea myself who killed him, he is reported as saying it was the IRA
seconds before his death.

Whether he did or not I don't know as I would be more inclined to run
rather than debate the issue myself. Republicans are denying it in
anycase.

Funny how you don't take that attitude about British denials of BA/RUC
involvement in black ops, both in the 6 and 26 counties...

Hypocrite (as usual).
