MORE TV ALERTS
The January 17, 1999 broadcast of "60 Minutes" on CBS will include an
interview with the medical pathologist who testified for the defense in the
Lacresha Murray trial. Interviews with several other principals in the
case will also be aired. Lacresha Murray, at the age of eleven, was
sentenced to 25 years in prison. Without evidence, witnesses, motive,
opportunity or history of aggressive behavior, she was convicted -- twice
-- of negligent homicide and injury to a child. If you are not familiar

On January 28, 1999, CBS "48 Hours" will broadcast the story of Terri
Hinson Strickland. After a house fire claimed the life of Terri's young
son, Joshua, and nearly killed her daughter, Brittany, Terri was charged
with arson and capital murder. Eventually able to gain release on bond,
Terri used the Internet to find the experts whose investigation showed that
the fire was caused by faulty wiring. Terri's story was profiled by

"Frontline" on PBS aired a powerful program on the use of informants to
obtain convictions in the "war on drugs." Unfortunately, we didn't have

TRIAL AND ERROR
How widespread is prosecutorial misconduct? How many innocent people are
deprived of life and liberty, how many victims of crime are left truly
unserved, to promote careers and enhance public images? The Chicago
Tribune has published an investigative series that documents hundreds of
homicide cases where innocent people were sent to jail, some to Death Row,
because of the "egregious misconduct" of prosecutors, usually in the form
of suppressing evidence or using evidence that they knew to be false. The
study starts with the 1963 Supreme Court ruling in the case of Brady v.
Maryland, which forbade prosecutors from "suppressing evidence favorable to
a defendant for purposes of determining guilt or imposing a sentence." In
their search for cases that violated this ruling, the Tribune examined
approximately 11,000 court rulings and 8,700 news stories on wrongful
convictions or prosecutor misconduct. The series is so important that we
