Paul Martin, chief executive of Two Shires Ambulance Trust, has backed
hospital bosses who suggest the development of specialist teams, such as
cardiology, as one of their proposals. This would see patients being
transferred by ambulance to a different hospital within the trust.
Mr Martin said: "In principle we support the proposals being put forward in
the public consultation. What we have to do is work with the hospital and
the Primary Care Trust to make sure that the overall system is viable.
Often the ambulance crew is seen as the Cinderella service, almost the last
thing people think about when they are making changes to hospital services.
I have been encouraged by the fact that we have been closely involved and
our views taken into consideration throughout the consultation process."
Mr Martin added: "Paramedics have an increased set of clinical skills which
means patients with relatively minor conditions can be treated at home. The
issue about trying to treat patients at home is an important issue for us.
It's better for the patient because they have been clinically assessed by
the paramedic crew. We want to support what is best for the patients."
