I also use a free news reader called Mozilla.

I find this much easier and better than Outlook.
The rest is just setting this up, which any local computer person should
be able to walk you through pretty quickly.
That outta get you started.

It requires a free registration, which (aside from taking a couple of
days) is quite reasonable. I've been very happy with them.

They've split mail and news off into Thunderbird, if you don't need the
web browser portion (some people stick with the AOL browser, some don't).
The reader alone is a bit faster and lighter.

Oh, much. Much less prone to viruses and other malware, too.
Thunderbird or Mozilla will require just some initial setup by a
somewhat savvy computer person (to hook up to the news server and such),
but then they are quite easy to use. If you can manage the AOL interface,
you should be fine.

Wow.
After all the fallout that followed the addition of Usenet access to AOL,
access, I never imagined I'd see the day when they'd discontinue it.

If you are using Windows, Agent (by forteinc.com) has a good reputation,
and news.individual.de is a good news server to use.
You're welcome to e-mail me for more help.
umar
Note that Free Agent would probably suffice for now. Also, your address
takes one to the German site; it's probably better to use

Can it be? Is that a turning leaf I see?
I suppose there may not be a 20 year anniversary, and that my
"Ten years of september" t-shirt [1] may become a collector's
item?

Not.

"Welcome to heaven; here's your harp and tuning key."
"Welcome to hell; here's your harp."
It shouldn't be, really, though.
But, then, if one pays enough attention to the nuances to realize that
it's not really a put-down to AOL users, one's also forced to admit that
this isn't October at all.
The history goes like this: Before AOL, Usenet always got full of
clueless newbies in September, when all the college campuses got full of
freshmen with new computer accounts. AOL came along, and then it was
always September, in the sense that there were always clueless newbies
showing up, all year 'round.
The problem never was AOL users being more clueless than anyone else.
The problem was all newbies being clueless, until they'd been around for
a month or two -- that's why things used to be bad in September, and get
better in October; it's why "October" means what it does in the
comments. But with AOL's exponential growth patterns, for quite a while
most of AOL users _were_ newbies who hadn't been around for long.
In my estimation, AOL's October came years ago; it's been a long time
since AOL's usenetters were mostly newbies. Most of them these days
seem to be the old guard, of people who've been around for years and
years. The time has long passed that turning off AOL will stem the tide
of newbies, and the feeders of endless September are....
...Actually, you know, it _hasn't_ been endless September for years, in
the parts of Usenet I've seen. It's been October, and November, and all
the rest of the seasons, and we're now stuck in the endless July,
waiting for another wave of a mass of fresh newbies that's never going
to come, though there are still a few trickling in, and the regulars are
mostly (but nowhere near all) still around.
Anyhow, if today is still endless September, it is the endless September
of Google Groups, not of AOL.

I love July, August, and even September. It is January that always seems
endless.

Not if you have to go to Block Island. There are more boats and the
wind chill is much more tolerable. Plus, you get to see lots of birds
in April, as Block Island seems to be the Grand Central Station of the
Atlantic flyway.
Unfortunately, I have to go there tomorrow, and carrying an Optimod
(bulky, relatively heavy piece of equipment). Ugh.

Elissa and Cat, what is this going to mean for your a.p participation?
Are you going to use Google Groups, or get a shell account, or ...?
Selki, hoping to continue seeing your ASCII around here
I have a nearly-always-on server for which I can probably offer shell
accounts to a limited number of folks what need such. It's where I read
USENET from myself.
I haven't been using the AOL newsreader for years. I still dial on through
AOL, but I use OE as a reader (I know, I know...) and that German news
server (if that's the word I'm looking for). I had no trouble setting it
up, and I'm sure that Cat can do it, too!

THIS January has felt endless. This has been New Zealand's worst summer

You do know that if I _do_ end up living in Australia, it's likely to be
Melbourne?

That'd be fine. It's still closer (and more visitable) than NZ. :-)

I love Melbourne. If I ever move to .au it's my first choice of place
to live.
However, my chances of moving to .au at all are very very slim (since
I've got a steady, reasonably well-paying job &c).
IOW, the "if" there is a mighty big one.
