Joe Biden’s laugh-filled debate wasn’t so funny on

The veep told some tall ones about the Libya terror
attack and about Iran’s nukes

Saturday, October 13, 2012

Joe Biden blew a lot of hot air at the debate on Libya
killings and Iran’s bomb.

The heat generated by Joe Biden at Thursday night’s vice
presidential debate cooled into object lessons in the
danger of bombast by a top United States government
official.

Biden’s smirking theatricality while facing Republican
Paul Ryan included exasperated putdowns and, at times,
broad factual assertions whose grounding in truth was
tenuous.

So it goes in skewering an opponent’s record.

Have a merry, if you like.

But the vice president went beyond the bounds where there
is license to play fast and loose.

He did a disservice by extending his bluster into real-
time issues of security and international relations.

First, there was Libya.

The constant laughing and condescending smirking from
Biden, as annoying as it was, wasn't what bothered me the
most. What really ticked me off was the way Biden was
constantly interrupting Paul Ryan as he was attempting to
speak, as well as the way the so-called "moderator",
Martha Raddatz, let him get away with it. (Raddatz often
interrupted Ryan herself. At times it was virtually 2-on-
1. She failed miserably at her job of being an impartial
arbiter of the debate. It was clear where her sympathies
lie.)

The rules of the debate were very clearly spelled out in
advance and each side had agreed to them. Each candidate
was to have two minutes to respond to each question put
to them. Joe Biden, acting like the obnoxious drunken
uncle that everyone tries to avoid at the family reunion,
rudely and repeatedly stepped all over Paul Ryan's
allotted two minutes. The level of disrespect shown to
Ryan by Biden was off the charts.

To his credit, Paul Ryan didn't respond in kind. He
stayed cool and collected and, in doing so, came across
as the adult in the room. I admire his restraint. If it
had been me sitting there instead of Paul Ryan, at about
the 30 minute mark I'd have reached across and punched
Biden right in his big, fat mouth.
