A water crisis in Mississippi's capital is a harbinger of worse
Jackson's system has been failing for years. Last year ice storms cut off
water supplies for several weeks. And even when water flows, residents have
been periodically advised to let it run for at least a minute to flush away
lead; then to boil it before drinking in order to kill bacteria. Lead is
not its only metal pollutant: since 2018 the city's water has failed to
meet treatment standards for copper, too. The scale of this problem extends
well beyond Jackson. Nearly 10m American households do not have access to
potable water. Some 21m people drank water from systems that did not meet
safety standards in 2015, the latest year for which data are available ..
Most water pipes were installed in the 1970s and 1980s .. As much as 18% of
treated potable water is lost to leaks each day .. Access to clean water
will worsen .. Climate change is pushing old systems to their limits ..
...
About 10% of tap water in the US is still supplied through ancient lead
pipes. Dozens of millions of the Americans drink this water. And with that,
local authorities often don't even know for sure how many lead pipes are in
use in their locality and where exactly they reside. About half million
American schools and childcare facilities get tap water through lead pipes.
Lead is known to affect human brain, which contributes significantly to the
increasing American stupidity.
Add to this the fact that almost all drinking water sources in the US are
contaminated with so called "forever chemicals", or PFAS, and about 2/3 of
the population drink water with PFAS exceeding unsafe concentration.
