Oh wait? We DO have one?
Um, if ever we needed STRATEGIC oil, this is now. The rainy day is here.
Give the public cheap oil for a few months to get the economy going again.
Then replenish the reserve when the price drops. Heck, they could even make
money doing it!
SPR Gas: Open anytime gas is $3.50 a gallon or higher or $2.00 a gallon or
lower.

The actual story is rather more pathetic.
The Bush administration stopped the purchase of cheap oil almost as
soon as it arrived in DC.
Then later, when the price of crude had already been jacked up - it
started to buy expensive oil - at the taxpayer's expense.
Most recently, when US gasoline customers needed price relief, it
declined to make that oil available.
Who's your daddy? Definitely not GW or Cheney.
stragegic reserves is for when the sheet really hits the fan. Like major
natural disaster, or when the Muslims decide to do another embargo.
Or when people have to go without food so they can drive to work.
We could release even 100 million barrels to ease the crisis. Also we could
BUY IT BACK AT A LOWER PRICE, and even make money in the process.
Gordon, the US uses 100 Million barrels of oil in approximately 5
days. Why don't you look up what that reduces to in terms of actual
distillate products? I know that your math isn't too good, so what
you do is take all of the production that can be turned into fuel out
of the total raw material and you can use that as a percent multiplier
to figure out what the real (another concept you have a problem with)
impact any figure you may have pulled out of your B### can have.
Basic math. It will get you in the ballpark, though.

Yes, many low income families do have to choose between buying food or
puting gas in the car, between paying their bills or buying gas but,
the reserves are for emergencies. The price of gas is not an
emergency.
I'm sure the government has some criteria for what is considered a
real emergency.
And Vance is right, 100 million barrels won't last long enough to give
any relief at all.
Releasing the reserves is only a temporary fix. We need a permanant
fix.
There are things we as individuals can do.
If those who can afford them would buy high gas mileage vehicles, that
would help lower the demand on gas. A lower demand will lower the
price.
I'm doing my part by buying a new car that gets almost twice the gas
mileage of my old car.
Also cut down on joy riding. Don't drive if you don't have to. That
will save you more money than if the government releases it's
reserves.
Contact your Senators and Congressmen/women. Tell them you want the
government to do something besides talk. This is an election year.
Give them the choice, if you want to be re-elected then do something
now. If they don't then vote them out and put someone new in their
place.

Go here to find the Senators for your state: http://www.senate.gov/
Go here to find your Representatives: http://www.house.gov/
And pray for a mild winter or people will not only have to choose
between buying food or putting gas in the car but also whether or not
to heat their house.

The purpose of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is not to lower gas prices.
"The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the largest stockpile of
government-owned emergency crude oil in the world. Established in the
aftermath of the 1973-74 oil embargo, the SPR provides the President
with a powerful response option should a disruption in commercial oil
supplies threaten the U.S. economy. It also allows the United States to
meet part of its International Energy Agency obligation to maintain
emergency oil stocks, and it provides a national defense fuel reserve."
