President Trump said Friday he’s in no rush to declare a national
emergency to fund his highly contentious border wall.

Trump’s declaration comes a day after he publicly flirted with the idea
while touring the border with Mexico in Texas and after a top Senate ally
urged him to pull the trigger on the controversial proposal.

“I’m not going to do it so fast,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
“We want Congress to do its job.”

He added: “What we’re not looking to do right now is national emergency.”

Trump is battling Democrats over more than $5 billion in funding for the
wall, claiming the US is being invaded at the border.

Newly minted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly told Trump the
House will not support legislation that adds money for the border wall,
leading to a White House showdown where Trump walked out of a meeting
saying “bye bye.”

Efforts to strike a compromise in Congress have gone nowhere.

A top Trump supporter, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, encouraged
Trump to declare the state of emergency in tweets both Thursday and
Friday.

“Mr. President, Declare a national emergency NOW,” tweeted Graham. “Build
a wall NOW.”
