The Religious Right and GOP Escalate Battle to Destroy Public Schools

America’s public school system and the constitutional separation of
church and state are under relentless assault.

In late April, the Indiana legislature approved House Bill 1003, a
measure that broadly funds religious and other private schools.

The multi-million-dollar program sets up a new school voucher scheme,
expands a tax credit program and offers tax deductions for the costs
of private education and homeschooling.

Gov. Mitch Daniels was a chief promoter of the package, and he clearly
means to force taxpayers to fund religious education.

He is the founder and driving force behind The Oaks Academy, a
“Christ-centered” private school in Indianapolis.

Daniels sometimes poses as a moderate, but his education plan is
anything but.

Make no mistake.

This is not about “education reform.”

This is part of a national drive to radically privatize education.

Indiana is just one of many states where mega-bucks foundations and
sectarian interest groups are demanding taxpayer dollars for parochial
and other private schools.

Their long-term goal is to shut down the public school system or leave
it so damaged that its role in American life is minimal.

In October 2010, Religious Right godfather Tim LaHaye addressed the
Council for National Policy about his goals for education.

(The secretive CNP is the premier meeting place for Religious Right
zealots, TV preachers, right-wing fat cats and others who want to take
America back to the Dark Ages.)

He viciously mischaracterized the public schools and issued a call to
arms for the CNP and its allies to remake them.

“I have a pet concern,” said LaHaye, the fundamentalist preacher and
“Left Behind” author who founded the CNP.

“And I think it is the concern of everyone in this room; and that is
we are being destroyed in America by the public school systems of our
country. And it was Abraham Lincoln who said, essentially, let me
educate the children of this generation and they will be the political
leaders of the next generation.

“And, folks, we have let the enemy come in and take over the greatest
school system in the history of the world,” he continued.

“At one time, Noah Webster was the school master of America, a
dedicated Christian who founded people on the Word of God and
principles of God. And I’d like to see you join me in prayer that God
would let us wrestle control of the American school system from the
secularists, the anti-Christians and anti-Americans that want to bend
the minds of our children.

“At our expense,” LaHaye blustered,

“they want to take the most priceless thing we have – the brains of
our children – and let them educate them. They educate the teachers,
they provide the textbooks, and we give them the most precious things
we have. That doesn’t make any sense to me. I’m hoping that this
conservative movement will be long enough to get a majority who can
vote what I consider a new bill of rights – a bill of parental rights
where parents can decide where to send their children to school.”

Touting “biblically based education,” LaHaye concluded that ideology
is the answer to education reform, not additional funding.

“May I suggest,” he said, that “more money is not what they need, it
is a better ideology, and we have already got it.”

LaHaye’s take on public schools is, of course, a pack of lies.

Our school system is not secularist or anti-Christian or
anti-American.

It welcomes children of all faiths (and none).

Nobody is turned away from the door, regardless of religion, race,
sex, sexual orientation, family background, disability or economic
situation.

And our public schools are generally governed by elected school
boards, whose members represent their diverse communities and are
answerable to them.

But LaHaye’s screed serves an important purpose.

It gives us the master plan that he and other right-wing ideologues
are pursuing.

That’s why we have raging battles over vouchers in Pennsylvania, New
Jersey and a host of other states.

(And it’s why House Speaker John Boehner strong-armed through Congress
a federal taxpayer-funded voucher scheme in the District of Columbia.)

LaHaye and his cronies hate America’s vitally important public school
system.

They want to shut it down and move to a “choice” system where
taxpayers subsidize private schools that are accountable only to the
sponsoring clergy and are free to indoctrinate children in their
“biblically based” ideology.

They don’t want to improve public education, as they sometimes claim;

they want to destroy it.

LaHaye is not alone in this battle.

Betsy DeVos, the infamous Koch brothers and other wealthy members and
supporters of the CNP are funding the nationwide attack on public
schools and church-state separation today.

Don’t be fooled.

They often put forward bogus “parents groups,” to serve as front
operations, but it’s they who are calling the shots.

Wake up, America.

This radical movement is advancing.

Let your legislators and members of Congress know how you feel before
it’s too late.

Can anyone argue that our public school system is a roaring success? Who,
pays the price for our failure to solve the problem with public education?
The two parties? The teachers? The government who runs the schools? The
unions? Or is it the children we fail, who pay the heaviest price? When is
ever are we going to put the children's interest, before all of our other
interests?

You are living in the distant past. America is now a different
society. Among other things it's bankrupt. BigGovernment made it so.

It is time to clean house on the NEA and the inbred system of school
boards that are directed by the liberal Federal Government.

We the people have sent $billions to the schools and those that are in
charge have failed us horribly. The greed and avarice among the pirates
in the NEA and the top leaders in the school boards have jacked salaries
out of sight for what we are getting. Even when we had country schools
with one young teacher teaching 8 grades all at once ..We got well
educated young men and women. Where the Hell did that go to. Thank the
fucking Liberals and the fucking Communist infest NEA for that. People
now take colleges courses to teach as it is the easiest and shortest
courses. Has a system that after you get a couple of years in..you can't
be fired. Obama got rid of an appointee that was going to end that
charade. Gets a fat and early retirement. Only works 8 months out of the
year. Doesn't have to upgrade education annually like the rest of us do.
Gets monetary stipends from both the federal government and the local
governments to go sit on some beach and fuck beach bums in Spain etc.
All we get out of *MOST* teachers is a constant drone of wanting even
more. When we have graduating students that once again lead the world in
innovative endeavor, Thyen and only then should we retain that staff of
nations teachers. Right now we need to take a large number of these
losers and teach them to hoe Cotton. So that they can finally make an
honest living. And shit can any damned Teachers Unions...The Teachers
work for Government which is "We the People".
We have here the bad head of the school board that makes twice as much
money as our good Governor and we can't shit can her. Fucking Liberal
Democrats have loaded our schools with teachers that could not fail in
college because they were not qualified to be there in the first place.

If they had left Senator McCarthy's UnAmerican Activities Sub Committee
finish its job..The NEA would be Communist history. Deservedly so.

You are a fucking Idiot. Our schools were great when ran from the local
level without Politics being in the mix. The Democrats just couldn't
stand to see a good thing continue without Federal Democrats sticking
their noses in and controlling things. Well we all have seen what
Government control under Liberal tutelage has created. The world is a
much worse place for it.

Tired of
Politics As Usual?
Help end it!

If government is “of, by and for the people”, why do so many people
complain about government?
If government is accountable to “We, the People”, why are so many
dissatisfied with the results?
How can it be both - accountable and in need of reform?

Wasn’t America supposed to be about limited government? Government makes
laws. Laws create privileges for some and steal inalienable rights from
others in the process. Laws steal choices. They prohibit and limit
choices for some people and make you obey someone else’s choices. It’s
like being told where to sit on the bus. Laws make you do things you
would not want to do if you were free. Was it meant to be this way? What
can be more valuable than choice? What do you have when you have no choice?

We find ourselves warring against each other - - red states and blue;
'them against us'; ‘Left’ vs. ‘Right’; Republicans vs. Democrats. These
forces are just about equal. Each seeks to take, keep and expand the
power to impose laws on the other. Campaign finance laws not
withstanding, both sides spent as if in combat. Win at all cost! Tons
of money, advertising campaigns, phone banks, promises, defections, “Get
out the vote” battalions, voter registration shenanigans, vote fraud,
hoards of pollsters, and armies of lawyers have become our new political
reality. All for the power to make laws others must obey.

Prohibitions, limitations and mandates now rule us all. Red voters hope
to impose their values on the blue and visa versa. No matter the
outcome, half of the electorate will have gained more power to impose
its values at the expense of the other half. Isn’t that expense becoming
unbearable and unsustainable for all?

Why are taxes high? Because there is no choice. You're forced to pay.
Why are schools bad? Because laws limit choices.
Why is government 'dysfunctional'? Because it makes the rules you
must obey.

Should values be forced on us and choices restricted by any party? Can’t
we try to liberate instead of regulate each other? Wasn’t America
supposed to be about voluntary agreement instead of forced obedience?

Yes, so kids in East Bumfuck Oklahoma can learn that gawd created the
universe in six days, the Grand Canyon was caused by the flood, and
there's no such thing as CO2. Sure, it wouldn't affect the kids who will
never been anything more than cops or soldiers or middle managers--they
don't need much education beyond toilet training. But the smart kids get
cheated.

You wouldn't have to ask these questions if you had a decent education.
Schools used to be able to control the comportment of students. They
also didn't just teach by rote..They instilled in the student a quest
for knowledge and the ability not to accept everything without solid
proof. I see none of these things in you. Apparently you are a product
of "Affirmative Action" as are a large number of todays teachers are.
Isn't it amazing the Home schooled students, Catholic Schooled and other
religious schooled students do so much better and go so much further in
life then our Federally controlled shool system? Even your president
went to a very exclusive Private school in Hawaii..Called Punahou..At a
purported Semester cost of about $18,000 dollars. I believe his grades
were average "C"s. Heresay from fellow students of course. So of course
you would agree that a nongovernment school obviously is better since
your Genius President was a private schooled C average and beat out
public school candidates. ;-p
