Sakhalin 2 project is an integrated oil and gas development business whose four investors are Mitsubishi Corporation, Russian Government owned gas company Gazprom, Shell and Mitsui & Co. Sakhalin Energy, produces crude oil from the oil field and also liquefy natural gas produced from the gas fields. Approximately 60% of LNG produced by Sakhalin 2 project is supplied to Japan. This project significantly contributes to Japan’s energy security.

Under pressure, Japan companies had to abandon their stake holdings and Putin has raised the stakes in an economic war with the West with a decree that seizes full control of the Sakhalin-2 gas and oil project in Russia’s far east.

Shinzo Abe tried to make a deal with Russia and preserve Japan’s energy security. He was killed before it could negotiate this deal.
