Yes, Communism has/had many of the qualities of a typical Religion: A
Sacred Text, a Utopian aim (secular, if not supernatural), an Indoctrinated
Faithful, Dogmatism, Persecution of Heretics.
But Communism is essentially a Politico-Economic creed, and its atheism
is largely incidental.
As for Atheism, as such, this is more due to the continued Absence of any
god, goddess, or God. All miracles, revelations, acts, and visitations,
happened in a superstitious, ignorant, peasant past - not in a scientific,
secular, and sceptical age, as of now.
So, "fasgnadh"s desperate attempts to prop up God (an odd aim for an
Agnostic) is doomed to failure, and regimes will tend more and more to be
secular and otherwise theistically indifferent - the sole current exceptions
being those under the Mad Mullahs of Islam (and that is more due to
perceived or imagined injustices, than doctrinal rectitude).
Atheism is simply an answer to one question of Philosophy : "Is there a
God?"
Otherwise, it is a big yawn; and people just get on with their lives.
