US boy, 5, accidentally shoots and kills sister, 2

CHICAGO — A five-year-old boy who was playing with a .22 caliber rifle
he'd been given as a gift accidentally shot and killed his little sister
in their Kentucky home, officials said.

The shooting happened Tuesday in rural Cumberland county and the
two-year-old girl was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced
dead, the state police said.

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White identified the girl as Caroline
Starks and said the children's mother was cleaning the house at the time
and had stepped outside onto the porch.

"She said no more than three minutes had went by and she actually heard
the rifle go off. She ran back in and found the little girl," White told
WKYT news.

The rifle had been given to the boy last year and was kept in the corner
of a room. The parents didn't realize a shell had been left in it.

"It's a Crickett," he told the Lexington Herald-Leader. "It's a little
rifle for a kid. ...The little boy's used to shooting the little gun."

An autopsy was set to be conducted on Wednesday, but White said he
expects the shooting will be ruled accidental.

"Just one of those crazy accidents," White said.

There were 851 deaths caused by accidental discharges of firearms in the
United States in 2011, according to the latest data from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.

A further 14,675 people were injured by accidental discharges of
firearms in 2011, of whom 7,991 were under the age of 18 and 3,569 were
under the age of 13.

The United States has been embroiled in a heated debate over gun control
and gun culture in the wake of a horrific December shooting at a school
in Newtown, Connecticut that killed 26 young children and educators.

President Barack Obama has pushed for tougher federal gun laws to
require universal background checks on gun buyers and called for a ban
on assault weapons like the one used in Newtown.

But last month, his background check proposal -- condemned by the
powerful National Rifle Association as an infringement on Americans'
constitutional right "to keep and bear arms" -- failed to muster the
necessary 60 votes needed to clear the US Senate.

No efforts have been made to prevent children from using firearms for
hunting and sporting purposes, a treasured tradition for many American
families.

The Crickett is just one of many child-sized rifles on the market and is
sold with the tag line 'My First Rifle.'

It comes in a number of child-friendly barrel designs and colors,
including hot pink for little girls. A host of accessories are also
available, like story books and a gun-toting beanie baby of the rifle's
mascot, a cartoonish cricket.

Time for the children to be taken away from the family and the parents
to be tried for manslaughter.

And please let me be on the jury.

Of course, you apparently being a native of Dumfukistan---a province of
which where this "accident" happened---you give priority to the utterly
insignificant---a comment about the state of mind on getting any federal gun
safety law passed (yes, NO background checks needed!)----and cannot be made
to focus on what is shockingly deplorable: that some backwoods, incest-bred
set of male and female of the species existing there gave a weapon to some
ADHD-afflicted ankle biter they crapped out and who managed to spatter the
brain and blood of a sibling out of its corporeal container.

Where was it presented in the story that BOTH the male and female pretending
to be father and mother were arrested for felony bad parenting and the
remaining children taken away and put into homes run by responsible
individuals??? That happens in DEVELOPED, CIVILIZED NATIONS.

But of course, this is Kentucky, a province of Dumfukistan.

Get indignant about that, gun fondling, right-wing filth!

Look up something called the "Manchin-Toomey bill," itself a ludicrous
pretense at gun safety which itself was buried under a right-wing pile of
excrement, proving the attitude that no background checks are needed.

Do they get something called "the Internet" in Dumfukistan where you
maintain a single-wide sty in all probability?

On one hand, of course, the moral high ground is to protect the
children from bad parents whenever possible. But on the other hand I
can't help but think that if Dumbfuck right wing trailer trash wants

Another one of those legal things. Here in CA, a 5 year old can't "own" a
gun.
Kentucky seems to have no lower age limit to "own".
The Brady Act prohibits persons under 18 from owning a long gun (except in
VT...16).

So...YMMV

Nobody is giving toddlers guns. As usual, leftists don't know the
meaning of words that they [try to] use.

Smaller guns meant to "fit" a child are good things. It allows them to

[...sewer-clogging flush of pathetic drivel...]

There is one thing that even me and a gun-fondling filthy right winger like
you agree on: that the reason for the idiosyncratic American obsession with
guns in all probability boils down to the massive failure of the American
education system at all levels and venues.

Your very presence as an appallingly stupid, gun-fondling dumbass only
leaves others with the impression that monumental ignorance accounts for why
anyone would lack the sense to want weapons safety. The alternative is to
characterize you not so much as being stupid or ignorant, or both, but to
dismiss you rightly as suffering from some severe psychopathology which is
refractory to therapeutic efforts. And in your case, with your panicked
attempts at trying to justify an unjustifiable position by employing the
fallacies of the insane, that certainly cannot be ruled out.

The disarmingly sagacious Bill Maher has stated that the Constitution needs
a "page 1 rewrite" clearly for the sole purpose of using the contemporary
vernacular to make the intentions of the Founders understood by even idiots
like you. He and the rest of humanity capable of sanity and reason---which
he assumes includes the Founders were they alive today---realizes that
changes in technology and society have been such that the Founders believed
that future generations would not lose a sense of proportion and do stupid
things like keep small arms in their homes for the purpose of revolting
against a government whose officials and policies are still determined by
ballot and not by bullet. And that does not take into account the fact that
divisions of heavily armed special forces can take out large numbers of the
U.S. population virtually unequipped to use the tactics of guerila war. The
Founders are all the more likely to be shocked at how the 2nd Amendment has
been misused and abused in complete defiance and denial of the FACTS showing
that the small arms in the casual possession of the average citizen are more
likely to be used against the owner of the weapon himself than against "bad
guys." The Founders know that bad guys are taken down and out by properly
constituted police forces...NOT BY VIGILANTES. Of course, of all things,
you and your clan members, Kluelouse, have no understanding of that---in
fact, you and your clan are fully askeered (sic) of properly constituted
police forces!

Yes, we almost certainly need a Constitutional re-write. Madison,
Jefferson, Franklin, Adams, and the whole lot of them would be shocked that
we are still working with so much of the document they wrote originally.
They would look at the fact that 25% of the population have only 6%
representation in the Senate. The Senate was formed by something called The
Great Compromise, this the Founders would attest to: it was not formed by
something called The Great Reaming, a metaphor I know that you can relate
to. The Founders would find the demographics existing today unacceptable
for constituting government in this modern era. For those objecting to
constitutional revision, the alternative is dis-Union, possibly preliminary
to a civil war. There can be no government (or taxation) without PROPER
representation (the adjective is important), and in that absence, revolt is
necessary and itself proper.

Considering the position of gun-fondling filthy right wingers is ULTIMATELY
self-destructive to society, gun safety advocates are content that over
time, law and policy will fall in line with the civilized, developed nations
on the planet. Primitives like you, Kluelouse, will see Maher prevail in
giving this nation a Constitution for a modern society. If it does not
evolve thusly, then the United States comes to an ignominious end, and
breaks up into smaller nation-states, some populated by barbarous savages---
you and your clan---but others representing the sentries of civilized
members of Homo sapiens, and necessariliy building fortress walls to keep
your ilk out while you continue down the path of self-destruction in
hopefully rapid fashion.

# Federal law sets the ages at 18 to purchase a long gun (rifle or shotgun)
# and 21 for a handgun. You are correct in that a state may have its own
# laws on age, but your statement about only in Vermont is incorrect.
# Arizona, for example, also says 18 for a long gun and 21 for a handgun.

Yes, but I was talking about the "own" laws, not the "buy" laws.

For what it is worth, my source was Wikipedia (chuckle)

"The following list of prohibited persons[8] are ineligible to own firearms
under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act.[9]
<snip>
-Minors defined as under the age of eighteen for long guns and the age of
twenty-one for handguns, with the exception of Vermont, eligible at age
sixteen."

# I believe that is also true for California. You may own one if it was
# purchased by a legal purchaser like your parent, but you cannot buy one
# yourself until you reach those ages listed above.

In CA the laws are weird and in a state of flux. Currently, as best I can
tell, minors can possess (legally acquired), but not "own" guns.

All of that is likely to change this year.

Jurisdictions should examine their statutes presently and make a
determination that the three following conditions must obtain should the
circumstances that occurred exactly as they did in Kentucky, Dumfukistan
arise:

1. The parents would be arrested and charged and convicted for felony
parental neglect/abuse for allowing use or possession of a weapon, loaded or
unloaded, irrespective of supervision, for a child below a certain age (the
age where there is a transition from pre-adolescence to adolescence would be
a logical cutoff)

2. All surviving children are made wards of the state and placed into caring
homes (including and especially LGBT homes in blue states)

3. The parents agree that they are never to reproduce again as a condition
of (a) staying out of prison and (b) having the newborn again made wards of
the state for placement into homes suitable for child development

Jurisdictions finding that those conditions do not obtain should amend their
laws as soon as humanly possible so they can credible claim to have joined
the ranks of civlized societies.

Just an FYI to you: you know those liberals you consider to be easy targets
because they are pansies who will put pansies in your gun barrels in an
attempt to sue for peace, who won't handle weapons themselves in attempt to
defend themselves or their principles, and who cannot be relied upon to take
you gun-fondling filthy right wingers out in some civil war???

Well, I am the OTHER KIND of liberal, who will likely prevail upon you to
shine my shoes, seeing as you are only fit for that kind of task.

I was a liberal once myself and now I fancy myself as independent. I
belong to no party and am registered as independent. I don't fancy
myself to better than anyone else nor do I look at liberals as pansies
although in your case, I may make an exception.

sophistry.

Then your positions on gun safety and the need for the regulation of the
manufacture, distribution, use, and possession of weapons of this class, say,
as in the United Kingdom are not as you have expressed them to be in Usenet
posts, or they have been misconstrued?

I could go down a checkmark list of items that establish you as filthy and
right-wing on issues related to guns alone.

At any rate, on the issue of being right-wing, you have already damned
yourself: you said "I was a liberal once myself." If you're not a liberal,
then you are a right winger, and if you are right winger, ipso facto you are
filthy. See how that works?

But you being a gun fondler is a regrettable trait. There are coping
mechanisms however. The good news for you is that you really MAY not be

Nope. Just have to bring them up right.
I had about 20 cousins in my age range. My grandparents kept a double
barrel 12 guage next to the door. All the kids learned to NOT TOUCH IT, and
to stop other kids from touching it, and to report to an adult, anybody who
did touch it.

Never had that occur.

I doubt that either of those ladies would be interested in him.

OTOH, Sadie Hawkins might. But then again, Sadie knows that there
is a pack cats just waiting for her to turn 30 unmarried.... so she's
kind of desperate.
Might even be desperate enough.
