I'm not sure how Obama can think he'd gain votes by going against
a very large organization like the Catholic Church in the USA, by
trying to force them to distribute/etc. birth control.

This might tie in with Obama's ongoing efforts to get legislation that
would limit charitable deductions... Something that would effect
churches, and maybe most charitable organizations in terms of losing
funding, going down in size.

Given how large these orgs are, it just seems crazy. I'd think women who
want free birth control under their Catholic health plans, vs. the huge
charity apparatus in the US... no contest. Let alone the many people
who aren't Catholics who'd sympathize for various reasons...

Of course, on the left side, in addition to women who want free birth
control and are getting their care from Cath., are leftists who are anti-
religious, but still not that strong a force..

I don't know if maybe the real goal is just to expand government. In the
case of the Catholics, if they'd simply get out of healthcare government
could buy/takeover the Catholic healthcare systems..

I don't know to what degree Catholic institutions in other countries
would distribute condoms, say, or birth control pills under national
healthcare systems, where there's a mix of government/private (like
France, say...) I'd be very surprised if they distributed "morning
after" pills.

A lot of Democrats who talk about the subject don't really understand
that the catholic heirarchy aren't apt to easily compromise and start
distributing birth control stuff..

I'd think the idea this will lead to government control of currently
Catholic institutions (healthcare/etc.) is crazy. Just lead to dems
losing all the more power.

Even if Obama changes course, there's going to be a loss of trust in him
among millions, who might otherwise sympathize.

Might also add..

Yes, most Catholics use birth control, despite what their Church
teaches. However, the idea that they'll therefore not mind Obama/dems
pushing the church seems unlikely, to me. Many who aren't very religious
might not care, but millions would. Plus, millions probably follow their
church's teachings scrupulously.

Would a smart employee of some national charity think, well, Obama wants
rich people to give less money to my employer... They'd have to go down
in size if he succeeds, but no problem. I can just get a job in
government.. Plus, if it were in danger of happening, his employer would
be explaining it clearly to everybody in the org and out.

Of course, that's something that hasn't been put into legislation at all,
the desire of Obama's to set charitable deduction limits.

I also kind of doubt that the money would end up going to government
instead anyway.

It may be just that Obama wants radical change and if he can't do it, so
just lose. I don't know. However, dems in general have gone along...

Simple, he knows that the MSM will issue a media blackout and no one will
know.

AS FAR AS BEING A LARGE ORGANIZATION.... THE ONLY PARISHIONERS
WHO ACCEDE TO THE WISHES OF THE CHURCH, ARE THOSE OF THE OLDER
GENERATION, OF WHICH, THERE AREN'T MANY LEFT, WHO LIKE MY PARENTS CAME
OVER IN THE BANANA BOATS, OR BY OTHER MEANS.
OTHERS OF THE LATER GENERATION, HAVE MINDS OF THEIR OWN.
