After centuries of persecuting Jews as “Christ killers”, why are
fundamentalist Christians now so keen to offer unconditional support to
the Zionist regime that is in charge in Israel, regardless of the
atrocities it commits? Yes, the majority of its victims are Muslims, but
don’t they realize there are Christians among those being hurt as well? Or
maybe they’re “the wrong kind of Christian”, or have the wrong skin
colour, or something. (Not that religion should matter, they are fellow
humans, after all.)

I can understand that there might be a guilt issue, particularly after the
slaughter the Nazis did, so the pendulum needs to swing the other way. But
instead of saying “stop the persecution, let’s learn to get along”, they
decided to export the problem: give the Jews their own homeland, so they
don’t have to live among Christians in Europe (and also America), then
Christian Europeans and Americans, I guess, won’t have to think about
getting along with them. Never mind there were already people living there
in Palestine: the slogan was “a land without a people, for a people
without a land”. Just declare the whole area “terra nullius”, in other
words. Just like our neighbours across the ditch did.

There may also be an ideological aspect to this support: there has long
been a tradition of the coming of “Judgement Day” among Christians, even
though the old “this generation shall not pass from the Earth” thing kind
of fell through. Nevertheless, they keep looking for signs that Doomsday
will be coming soon, and apparently one of the signs is the recreation of
the state of Israel.

Thoughts, anyone? Did I miss anything?

If you google
Day of Judgment January 17
you will see that at least one site lists January 17 as Judgement Day
(but apparently it is about judging yourself).

There is a kind of Christian Zionism (which is not at all the same
thing as Zionist Christianity) which derives from a movement that
arose in certain Protestant circles in the 19th Century.

This movement is known as Dispensationalism (you can find out more
from a web search), and basically divides the Bible into a number of
periods or ages, called "dispensations", and those parts of the Bible
are seen as being relevant only to people living in that
dispensation. Special editions of the Bible were printed (the
"Scofield Reference Bible) with notes about these dispensations, and
for many readers of the Scofield Reference Bible these notes are as
much holy write as the Christian scriptures themselves.

One of the crucial events for Dispensationalists is the establishment
of the State of Israel in 1948, which marked the start of a new
dispensation.
