SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wis. —
A Pizza Hut employee in South Milwaukee is charged with shooting and
killing the manager over $7,000 and then leaving his body in a trash can
behind the restaurant.
Kavonn Ingram, 31, of Milwaukee, is charged with First Degree
Intentional Homicide, Hiding a Corpse, Armed Robbery, and Possession of
a Firearm by a Felon.
On Feb. 7, a city of South Milwaukee officer was dispatched to the Pizza
Hut located near Chicago Avenue and College Avenue. Police say a garbage
truck driver found the body inside a trash can near the dumpster at the
back of the restaurant. The criminal complaint says the body was covered
with plastic bags, and a trail of blood led from the dumpster area to
the back of the Pizza Hut.
The body was later to be identified as Pizza Hut manager Alexander
Stengel. Police say Stengel's wallet, keys, and cell phone appeared to
also be missing.
The criminal complaint adds that when detectives went to search the
Pizza Hut, they found the majority of the floors dirty except one area
past the front counter into the kitchen. Police also say they found a
small utility closet with blood on it and coagulated blood in the
utility closet sink. A mop in the closet also appeared to have bloody
handprints.
During the autopsy, Stengel was found with a gunshot wound to the head,
a cut across his throat, and puncture wounds on his neck. The cause of
death was determined to be homicide.
The criminal complaint says that when South Milwaukee Police reviewed
surveillance video from the Taco Bell across from Pizza Hut from
February 5 at 10:25 a.m., they can see a suspect dragging a trash can
from the back of the restaurant to the dumpster. Police add that the
suspect appears to be struggling to pull the can.
Police also interviewed a regional manager who works at the South
Milwaukee Pizza Hut, who said that on February 3, Stengel had shown a
large roll of cash to several employees. The complaint notes that an
independent investigation revealed that Stengel had cashed an
inheritance check in Cudahy before heading into work that day for
$7,000.
Police also interviewed the general manager of Pizza Hut, who said that
she received a text from Stengel's phone on Feb. 5 that read, “Had a
brain fart what's the door code again? Left my keys in the store.” She
also said she received a call from Stengel's phone where no one spoke,
and the audio was muffled and windy.
The criminal complaint also says that more surveillance video reviewed
shows the same person who was dragging the trash can boarding a bus
about a half hour later, at 11:01 a.m. Video from the Milwaukee County
Bus shows the suspect, later identified as Kavonn Ingram, take a
cellphone out of his pants and reviewing it.
Cell phone records for Ingram were reviewed, and police say mapping
found Ingram to be at the Pizza Hut at 10:25 a.m. on Feb. 5. Police say
they executed a search warrant at Ingram's residence, and his girlfriend
answered the door. Police say she indicated that Ingram told her that
Stengel was about to get a large settlement. Further interviews in the
complaint with Ingram's girlfriend says he told her, “The head works as
a silencer. So if you and him are in the back of the store, and your gun
is to his head, and you shoot him in the head, it works as a silencer,
and no one is gonna hear it.”
Police say in the bathroom, they found blood stains in the sink and a
white towel with blood stains. Police also say they recovered a red and
black backpack that contained a Taurus G2C 9mm handgun containing three
unfired FMJ 9mm cartridges and a check from Pizza Hut in the name of
Ingram.
