HEAD: A Frightened Liberal Elite Pitchforks Sarah Palin
Thomas Frank has a tendency to make vague charges with no facts; many of the
references in his Nov. 18 column "The Tilting Yard: "The Persecution of
Sarah Palin" are simply incorrect.
What is more striking in Mr. Frank's opinion is that, with all the whining
and vindictive instances that he enumerates, never once does he say that
Sarah Palin's statements in her book "Going Rogue" are false. He only says
that it is unacceptable to complain. This leaves the assumption that, in
Washington politics, it is acceptable to damage another's character because
that person can never complain since complaining about it would be
unacceptable proof of whining and vindictiveness and show evidence of a poor
character.
Maybe his derogatory reference to the wildfires in Alaska that Sarah Palin
says will "burn away deadfall to make way for new growth" is exactly the
change that is needed in the Washington political establishment.

I wonder if Mr. Frank's vitriolic review of Ms. Palin's "Going Rogue" stems
from angst caused by conservative trespassing on what the liberals assumed
to be their exclusive right to trash opponents by any means possible. So
what if she settled scores? Liberals have never done it? It's fascinating
and instructive that, as with most of the media criticisms of her, the idea
is to destroy the person without wasting time on any underlying political
issues.

Why this obsession with Ms. Palin by liberals? And why all this animus
against her? It's kooky. One would think they imagine her to be some sort of
alien life form, threatening to destroy their known world. Reacting like a
frightened mob, Mr. Frank and his cohorts provide us with an endless array
of "teachable moments" about the pathology of the political left.

Did Mr. Frank and I read the same Sarah Palin book? How did I miss all the
whining? With the constant drubbing, sniping, belittling and condescension
Ms. Palin has had to absorb from the elite snobs in the media, it's a wonder
the woman (and her family) can still walk upright on two legs.
Not qualified? Her healthy, grounded life in Alaska has made her imminently
more qualified than the two big city politicians at the head of the current
administration.

Mr. Frank reveals himself as a big-Congress-regulation fan. His review is
more a critique of free markets than of the book. His criticism of Ms.
Palin's embrace of the history and tradition of conservatism and her correct
noting of the long historical tradition of creative destruction is merely
his expression of dislike of market forces. Perhaps he would prefer that
somebody still manufacture buggy whips?
Also correct is her observation that FDR's policies turned a deep recession
into a deeper Depression. On this point, Mr. Frank might read Nobel winner
Milton Friedman's "Free To Choose." Chapter three clearly explains this
history of government failure that was fueled in part by petty political
jealously in Washington of New York City and the Federal Reserve Bank of New
York.

I'll again ask my question of you sweaty mens and girly boys here: what is
it about a strong woman who is a private citizen, wife, mother, grandmother,
and moose hunter trying to make her way in the world that so scares you?

You wingnuts go right ahead and run Palin for president. Nothing
could be funnier. You go right ahead and assure an Obama re-election.
You losers go right ahead. Please.
Levi nailed it. No way in hell she'd take a pay cut and hold an
elected job - if she could ever get elected again.
Obviously. But for some reason the right wing keeps dragging her out
to spew some more extremist dogma somehow thinking that helps their
cause?

No, I'm serious, you're a total hoot. You go right ahead and run
Palin for president, you morons are just stupid enough to do it. Go
ahead and ensure another term for Obama.
