For those Americans who actually pay attention to something other than
Kim Kardashian and the NBA, did you happen to catch an image of 0bama at
his televised press conference yesterday? When it started raining on
0bama (and you gotta love that!) a U.S. Marine was conscripted to hold an
umbrella over Dear Ruler while 0bama dodged media questions. This
umbrella-holding, by the way, was in direct violation of P1020.34F of the
Marine Corps Uniform Regulations chapter 3.

Ive been here for a few laps around the sun now, and I dont ever
remember seeing something like this before. There are uniformed Secret
Service personnel at the White House who could have performed this
function --- but Marines? I do remember Hillary using Marines to walk
around with treys of canaps the White House while her husband was
running the show however.

There was some disturbing symbolism here. 0bama clearly will not do what
he, as president, should do to protect men and women serving America
overseas, but the Marines can damned sure protect him from the rain.

The knee-jerk anti-Obama foolishness has gotten so absurd that it's
hard to keep up anymore. Seriously, was this even the effort required to
type it? (The same question can be asked about what I just typed.)

This idiot who likes to post uniform regs ought to read them. Holding
an umbrella, or a meatloaf for that matter, over the POTUS is a
perfectly legal order.

Apparently this issue is all over the right-wing blogosphere as
nutjobs jizz all over themselves with statements that the president
caused a Marine to violate uniform regulations. They are unable to
distinguish, it seems, that the Marine in question was "operating" the
umbrella, not carrying it or making it a part of his uniform. He,
apparently, HAS read the regs and understands what a legal order is.
Also that the POTUS outranks the Commandant, who works for him.

Oh, a tray of canapes is not made part of the uniform when carried
either.

I twice voted for and support President Obama but I thought that
having a Marine hold an umbrella was a bad idea. The event should have
been held indoors.

It seems extremely unlikely that the President of the United States
had anything to do with the decision. President Obama walked into a
photo op for GOP hacks to whine about and did what he had to do.

Where were all the right-wing losers when US Marines and the rest of
our armed forces were spilling their blood in W's pointless adventures
in Afghanistan and Iraq? Not a peep about that but they're outraged
that a US Marine held an umbrella for his Commander-in-Chief.

Yes it is. But it does demonstrate a lack of respect for military customs,
and for the marine standing in the rain without a raincoat.

There is no reason to do what Obama did.

True. I was trying to be sensitive to the separation of powers
argument I was sure was coming as a follow-up, the enumerated power of
Congress to make laws for the governance of the armed forces, etc. But
in my experience uniform regs come from the service secretaries,
although they delegate, as here, to others. In this case the
Commandant of the MC. Congress would get involved if appropriated
funds were needed to re-clothe the services, but the issue of design
and wearing is not something they get into.

Interesting for me, I learned that female Marines may, optionally,
carry a foldable umbrella so long as they have their saluting hand
free. Males may not.

The Navy never uses umbrellas, either gender in my experience. I think
the Air Force does. Not sure about the Army.

It is no surprise that The Irrelevant One is unable to make such a
simple decision. After all, he had not been given the script with all
the information, because he was . . . that day.

Army Regulation 670-1 (Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and
Equipment), paragraph 27-27, reads: Females may carry and use an
umbrella, only during inclement weather, when wearing the service
(class A and B), dress, and mess uniforms. Umbrellas are not
authorized in formations or when wearing field or utility uniforms.

Of course generals can do whatever the hell they want to. I bet these
guys screaming about Obama's umbrella had no problem at all with
Patton's pearl-handled revolvers.

Not hardly. USSS agents and UD officers don't carry luggage and they

What I can't figure out is why you singularly worry about American
politics.

You're Canadidian, aren't you? If politics is your thing, is there
absolutely nothing going on in Canadia for you to comment on?

It's bizarre how focused all you Canadidians are on the machinations in
a country you're not even a part of.

Really? Do you know how many Americans are living in Canada?

Do you know how many of them are dual citizens?

Do you really think that what goes on in the United States doesn't have
impact on Canada?

Wow - anyone that ignorant must be a proggie.
