An infamous photo of former Canadian First Lady Margaret Trudeau
sans underwear is on the auction block.
With the 40th anniversary of Studio 54 coming up — plus a
documentary and a book by the nightclub’s co-owner Ian Schrager
— Palm Beach Modern Auctions is offering hundreds of gelatin
silver prints taken at the disco hot spot by the late Richard P.
Manning.
The black-and-white images — showing Andy Warhol, David Bowie,
Truman Capote, Michael Jackson and such survivors as Elton John,
John Travolta, Cher, Brooke Shields and Calvin Klein — will be
hammered down Feb. 4 in West Palm Beach, Fla.
But Manning’s most controversial shot was of Margaret Trudeau —
then-estranged from her husband, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre
Trudeau — sitting on the floor at Studio 54 with her knees and
her long skirt hiked up enough to show that she was going
commando.
High Society magazine published the image in its September 1979
issue, fanning the flames of Maggie’s notoriety.
Interest in the photo increased in 2015 when Trudeau’s handsome
son Justin — who was 7 when the photo was taken in 1978 —
followed in his father’s footsteps to become prime minister.
Manning died in 2013. The sellers are his relatives who had
stored the photographer’s life work in a basement upstate.
