... Jack Reed, a prominent member of the US Senate's armed services
committee visiting Iraq, said the increasing mayhem raised questions about
whether the United States could win the fight against a wider insurgency,
whatever the outcome in Falluja.
"The insurgency is not abating," said Reed, a Democrat and former officer in
the 82nd Airborne Division. "In some respects, it's becoming more
pronounced in many parts of the country . . . It's hard to determine
whether that's the last gasp or continued building momentum."
Veterans like Reed are haunted by Vietnam, where the Americans' desperately
hard-fought success in the battle for the city of Hue, during the communist
Tet Offensive in 1968, turned out to be the first step towards not ultimate
victory but defeat.
This is why each aspect of the battle - the effectiveness of American
firepower, the mettle of the marines, the tactics and courage of the
insurgents - is already being closely analysed not just at US central
command and the Pentagon but also in the back streets and mosques of
Baghdad. They know that more fighting lies ahead.

The Marine commanders, in their pre-attack pep talks, compared Fallujah to
Hue. To this day, they don't understand that Hue was not a victory. How
primordially and abyssmally witless does it get?
Oh and hey, did I mention STUPID yet?
