Texas farmers use business wile to weather drought

The drought that parched the vast Texas landscape, sucking dry ponds, lakes and reservoirs and severely damaging soil and grasslands, traumatized farmers and ranchers, who - like their ancestors who survived the Dust Bowl and the dry spell of the 1950s - will tell tales about the drought for generations.

The drought of 2011 cost $7.6 billion in crop losses, the most ever recorded, and forced ranchers to slaughter millions of animals, cutting Texas' cattle herd to its smallest size since 1952.

"I don't think anybody's back in a position yet to say this is over with."

Why are Greek and Italian politicians so bad?

Why have Greece and Italy, cradles of two great ancient civilizations - the first of which [a slave society] invented democracy [for only the one percent] - been so badly served by their modern politicians at such a crucial time?

What is undoubted is that in both countries, traditional politicians are finally suffering the wrath of populations which have hitherto complacently voted for them, as the economic crisis creates deep suffering among ordinary people.

This has brought the prospect, at least, of real change.

"The problem is they've never had a real job - they've never had to earn a living so they haven't got a clue about society. They have no values and all they care about is collecting their little salary. They're rotten to the bone. That's our misfortune," said Greek taxi driver Nikos Kremidas, 60.

In both Italy and Greece corruption fed by the sums needed to conduct politics in the age of television and the proceeds generated from selling state assets, combined with rigid party structures, have helped create self-serving political classes.

So too have a system of clientelism or patronage that has its roots in the 19th century and beyond and the more recent "death of ideologies" following the end of the Cold War, robbing parties of the basic beliefs that drove them for decades.

Can the Afghan dilemma be solved only by conferences?
----

If the Afghan issue was solvable by mere conferences, it should have been solved long ago. A number of regional and international conferences like Bonn, Tokyo, London, Lisbon, Istanbul and the latest Chicago conference have been held. But the reality is that after each conference the Afghan issue is made much more complicated.

The reason is that these conferences are not held [for any positive reason] but [only] for the deterioration of the core issue.

It is just for the justification of the American [Superpower] and its [NATO] allied occupation of Afghanistan. Since the main intention was not for the solution, they could not find out any workable resolution.

In the beginning (ten years ago), America [The Superpower] considered itself the exclusive power of the world. She [It] did not take anyone into consideration. She [It] announced that in the present global situation, national sovereignty is meaningless and there are no borders for us. If America [The Superpower] considers that its security is in danger, it can retaliate anywhere, anytime and on anyone.

It was the heroic Afghan nation that made America [The Superpower] and its [NATO] buddies realize that the freedom and national sovereignty of other nations not a pudding to be swallowed easily.

The Americans [The Superpower troops] do avail advanced technology and modern satellite systems but the ongoing Jihadi movement is equipped with sacred belief, fervor of sacrifice and it enjoys wide range public support. It is a weapon which is available neither in Washington nor in Pentagon, London or in Bonn. This is a reality which can never be altered by mere propaganda.

We have repeatedly said that in Afghanistan an Islamic and national Jihadi movement is going on against the external invasion following the example of our forefathers. Its nature and essence cannot be changed whatever blames and labels are assigned to it.

As long as the invading forces under the headship of America [The Superpower] do not surrender to the [Afghan people's] natural and legitimate right of full sovereignty and the establishment of a system fully coherent with their beliefs, cultures and traditions;

these conferences, false media reports, superficial diplomacy and advanced technology cannot solve this dilemma nor can [they] terminate the war.

The most core necessity for the solution of this problem is sincerity, the acceptance of reality and handing over the right to the right people. Otherwise the Afghan predicament cannot be solved in the following decade just as it could not be solved in the past decade.

Therefore our message to the participants of the Chicago conference is that if they really want to solve the issue, they should realize and accept the ground realities inside Afghanistan. They should respect the sovereignty of Afghan nation. They should let this nation build a system in free environment, reflective of their religious rules and national characteristics and parallel with dreams and wishes of Mujahedeen.

It can not only guarantee the security and stability of the country but also of the whole region and even the whole world.

Steelworkers Get "WARN Notices" --Mills Will Go Idle Starting June 4

RG Steel announces it will idle all its mills, starting June 4.

The letter that went out to all steelworkers put the blame squarely on the company's lenders and investors.

It says they are suspending funding of RG Steel's operations.

So now as of June 4, all RG Steel plants--Yorkville, Beech Bottom, Martins Ferry, Steubenville, Mingo Junction and even the Wheeling office headquarters--will be idled.

So will their plants in Sparrows Point, Md., and Warren, Ohio.

Top CEO pay equals 3,489 years for typical worker

A minimum wage worker would have to work 636 years to make...[the median, not top, CEO salary of $9.587 million].

A person making the national average [NOT average: median] salary [of $39,312] would have to work 244 years to make the median CEO salary.

If you assume the CEO works a 60-hour week, the pay comes to $3,072.84 per hour, or $51.21 per minute.

To put that in perspective, the minimum wage worker would have to labor more than 10 weeks to make what the median CEO earns in an hour.
