MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (TND) — One of the U.S.'s first non-binary
federal officials allegedly stole a woman's suitcase from an
airport in Minnesota.

Sam Brinton, the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy
"Deputy Assistant Secretary for Spent Fuel and Waste
Disposition," has been charged with felony theft over the
allegedly stolen Vera Bradley brand suitcase from an airport
baggage claim in September, according to court documents
obtained by Fox News. Brinton reportedly uses they/them pronouns.

The stolen baggage is reportedly worth $2,325, and went missing
on September 16. According to a criminal complaint, officers
identified Brinton as the person who took the missing luggage
after reviewing surveillance footage. Brinton was also
reportedly seen on video removing identification tags from the
bag.

Investigators say in the filed criminal complaints that Brinton
was later seen with the bag while they were traveling to
Washington D.C. and at least one other instance. Brinton
reportedly initially denied to police officers that they had
taken the luggage.

If I had taken the wrong bag, I am happy to return it, but I
don’t have any clothes for another individual," Brinton
reportedly told authorities, according to Fox News. "That was my
clothes when I opened the bag."
Brinton rescinded that claim just two hours later when they
called authorities back. They alleged they took the expensive
bag by mistake. Brinton blamed "exhaustion" for the mistake,
according to the filed complaint.

DEFENDANT said when they opened the bag at the hotel, they
realized it was not theirs," court filings reportedly state.
"DEFENDANT got nervous people would think they stole the bag and
did not know what to do. DEFENDANT stated they left the clothes
from the bag inside the drawers in the hotel room."
Brinton has been charged with felony theft of moveable property
without consent which, if convicted, could bring a five-year
prison sentence or a $10,000 fine, according to the Exchange
Monitor.

The DOE reportedly confirmed to Fox News that Brinton was placed
on leave following the accusations.
