THE POST-CRESCENT
PCN...@Athenet.Net

Not all anti-homosexual bigotry has come from the
Reggie Whites of the religious right.

The following memorandum* of Madalyn Murray O'
Hair shows that at least part of the Atheist community
is not immune from this bigotry.

The memorandum - dated May 20, 1976 - was addressed
to New York journalist John Lauritsen in response to his
protest against her homophobic remarks made to a
convention of one of her oganizations, the Society of
Separationists. The memorandum follows:

"The California Chapter of Society of Separationists, Inc.,
Has sent me a zerox [sic] copy of your letter dated May
Day, 1976.

"I would expect this kind of literature to issue from a miso-
gomist [sic]. I am a female head of a American Atheist
group. You are a cocksucker. You like men and boys. You
don't like women. We don't have cocks for you to suck.

"Also, we are not Marxists as you are.

"Form your own group of cock-sucking Atheist Marxists
and be happy, kiddo, but don't count me as an ally.

"SOCIETY OF SEPARATIONISTS, Inc.
"Madalyn Murray O'Hair, President"

A question that should be posed to Ellen Johnson, present
head of American Atheists, the premier O'Hair organization,
is: Will she introduce a resolution to the next national convention
of American Atheists condemning the founding mother of
Am. A. - for her homophobic bigotry?

Isn't robertnorlander pro/an atheist?

Seems to me that Mr. robertnorlander feels that the official atheist
organization should retract Ms. O'Hair's comments, thus putting an
official end to discrimination and bigotry against homosexuals within the
atheist sect.

Mr. Fish #623 on the other hand seems to dispute this idea by attributing
Mr. robrtnorlander information and request as a "troll".

This leads one to wonder how many other atheist like Mr. Fish #623 would
continue with the status quo of bigotry towards homosexuality within the
atheist movement?

I find it very interesting and disheartening that for 22 years no
official leader from the Atheist Movement has retracted Ms. O'Hair's
comments. Could it be that the Atheist Movement is as bigoted as some
Religious Movements?

What I don't get is why all theists want to lump all atheist together. I
thought the only two things we had in common was our disbelief and free
thinking. It really annoys me that because I am an atheist people think they
know what I feel about everything.

Within what? It's an organisation, not even big. It's like asking Clinton to
apologise for something that Jimmy Carter did. And now, get *this* straight.
Amongst the people here in a.a, i doubt there are more than 20 members of
American Atheists. American Atheists are *not* by *any* means _the_ official
organisation of anything! Fuck you for pigeonholing us.

Seemed trollish enough. Whereever did you get the idea that a.a was a
sounding board for, and a faction of the American Atheists? Are you bychance
somewhat limited in your mental faculties? No, wait, you are a theist,
right? Moot point.

EXCUSE ME, dear mister dickhead. First of all, THERE IS NO *THE ATHEIST
MOVEMENT*! And why, e'en as thou art a theist <spit>, wouldst thou continue
to slander us atheists <mmm>, yea, even to go 'gainst thou own holy book to
bear false witness of your fellow men? Care to explain how there is a
"status quo" of bigotry amongst atheists, liar?

I find it *very* disheartening to find that to carry the deep-rooted fear
you have of using your own brain, you have to imagine bad things about
people you obviously know nothing about, just to justify your own lack of
life. You have mightily offended me by calling me a bigot. I find it
sickening to have to tolerate scum like you on this NG, scum that festers
old injustices like they were the diamonds and pearls of life. Pray tell, do
you have to hit yourself over the head with a plank a lot, just to tolerate
yourself every day? That *would* explain a lot. Or, are you incapable of
viewing people without the deep ingrained stereotypias you obviously carry
in your heart of hearts, wishing you were better than the others? That's a
very juvenile behaviour pattern, but one that would suit yout ilk very well.

I suggest you get your facts straight before posting again.

Only part of the atheist movement can be construed as
homophobic just as only part of organized Christianity
is homophobic. It should not be forgotten, however,
that the Bible commands capital punishment for homosexual
activity.

Yes, I am an atheist. Unfortunately, I have found
irrationality and bigotry among atheists just as I
have found it among religious folk - that is not to
say that there are no thinking and rational people among
religious folk.

American Atheists, the organization founded by Madalyn
Murray O' Hair must be considered as homophobic as the
most backward Christian sect that upholds the Bible as
the literal word of the thundering deity of Sinai.

When American Atheists repudiates Madalyn's bigotry
towards homosexuals and others then and only then can it
be considered an organization worthy of respect and not
an organization that was simply a money-raising scam
operated by the Murray O'Hairs for their personal
enrichment, a scam which present officers may be seeking
to continue.

The kind of vulgar response dispatched from Finland
certainly will not add to public respect for atheists
and might diminish the high regard which the world
has for the people of Finland.

It should be noted that that American Atheists has
enabled the O'Hairs to establish overseas bank accounts
worth - according to some estimates - at least $20 million.
An organization of only 20 people could hardly be bilked
of that amount.

Read the Rappaport book for the truth about the O'Hairs
and their atheist scam, a scam conducted in the finest
tradition of Jim Bakker, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell.

Several things are worthy of note here. You have stated that no
official leader from the Atheist Movement ....."

Do you believe there is ONE atheist movement? Or did you say
"Atheist Movement" when you should have said American Atheists?

Saying the "Atheist Movement" is sort of like saying the "Christian
Movement."

Perhaps a visit to a couple of infidel, humanist, atheist, secular,
skeptic, freethinker websites would give you an idea of the scope
and breadth of the non-theist community.

Here's a vulgar response from Kanata, Canada:

Fuck you.

Your money's on the dresser, will you still respect me in the morning if I still
respect you?

Proving that human beings can be ripped off. Who knew?

Ah, so your problem is *reading comprehension*. Where did Kalle say that 20
people constituted the membership of the Amer. Atheists? Answer: nowhere. She
said that no more than 20 alt.atheism atheists were members of American Atheists.

I got that on the first reading.

The original post was very likely intended to stir the shit and do nothing productive. That would make it a troll. If
the poster comes back into the thread, maybe he'll be considered worth listening to.

There is no atheist movement. However, in my experience homophobia is not common among atheists.

Madalyn Murray O'Hare, if she even ever made this comment (proof,
please), was speaking only for herself, not for all the members of
American Atheists. If you are so dense as to not understand this, then
you are a fool and a trouble-maker. I'm sure that there are gay
members of AA who also think that you are merely trying to kick up a
fuss. And, please stop repeatedly posting the same articles in
alt.atheism. If you really are an atheist, you are doing your damndest
to aggravate other atheists by doing this.

Then, why haven't they been caught by now? It seems a bit odd that
three people could run off and disappear while having accounts with
millions of dollars in them just sitting there doing nothing. It is
damned odd. I'm still waiting for the bodies to be found. No one would
be that stupid. As far as I'm concerned, they were all murdered. After
reading six of Madalyn Murray O'Hare's books and knowing how hard she
worked for years to get all the information she acquired about
atheists and atheism, I refuse to believe that she would do what she
is accused of having done. I'll only believe it if and when she is
dragged into a courtroom in handcuffs and freely admits that she did
this. Until you have evidence that can be used against her in court,
shut the hell up!

Most theists are simply unable to conceive of something so odious to

their mindset as individuality. The fact that most atheists refuse to
be a part of any group is simply beyond them. And the fact that
atheists who do join some kind of group still remain individuals just
boggles their mind. Theists are of the sheepflock mentality - you

will never happen with atheists, and theists just are incapable of
understanding this. In fact, it scares the hell out of them. They need
to think that they understand us, so that they can condemn us for what

He's been trying to do this for weeks. He hates O'Hare and is willing
to say anything to smear her, now that she isn't here to defend
herself. I wonder what the other people in his atheist group think of

Why is it that these so called "free-thinkers" (try saying that with a lisp)
resort to condescension as a means of blowing off coments they don't agree
with?

Vulgar? I'll tell you what's vulgar! Vulgar is an outright liar, and an
intellectually dishonest idiot like you! How dare you call a group of people
bigots without *any* proof whatsoever, even if *one* of them is a bigot? I
might call you a whoremonger and a adulterer, as i seem to remember that in
the last few years there's been a good few xian leaders falling into those
traps. You, sir, seem to lack the intellectual integrity of requiring proof
before drawing conclusions. Not that this surprises me, you theists have
been intellectually dishonest for as long as there has been religion.

Speaking for myself, after trying to use reasoned and logical
arguments with theists for the umpteenth time the feeling of banging
heads against brick walls grows into a crescendo of frustration at
which point I give up all pretence of civility and talk to the theist
in the only manner which they seem to be able to relate to.
ie I speak to them in a condescending manner.

I won't try and speak for Mickey but I would be willing to bet a
modest sum of money that she was driven by similar thoughts in her

Michelle would be warmly welcomed in my home should she ever find
herself in my neck of the woods during her next trip to Limeyland.
From her posts I find her to be intelligent, usually eloquent and
always interesting. You, on the other hand, fail all 3.

Do you feel like being alone on a regular basis? I thought christians

You are a fundy troll who is attempting to cause trouble by assuming

Atheists) being officially discriminatory or bigoted towards
homosexuals.

> >Mr. Fish #623 on the other hand seems to dispute this idea by attributing

What "information"? What "request"? What the fuck are you talking about?
His post was inflammatory and meant only to provoke outrage. Thus, he is
a troll.

> >This leads one to wonder how many other atheist like Mr. Fish #623 would
> >continue with the status quo of bigotry towards homosexuality within the

You are one fucked up person. How the hell does one person's OUT OF
CONTEXT quote constitute "information"? Where the fuck is the letter she
was supposedly responding to, eh? Perhaps her response was entirely
appropriate given the circumstances? But we don't know because not
enough information was provided. Only *ONE* quite biased side of the
story was presented. That's called "trolling". Mr. Norlander can
therefore be justly labeled as a troll.

Are you perchance a theist?

> >I find it very interesting and disheartening that for 22 years no
> >official leader from the Atheist Movement has retracted Ms. O'Hair's

And that's another thing (I'm glad you brought it up):

The quote is >>> 22 FUCKING YEARS OLD!! <<<< for crying out loud!!!

You know, people *can* change. People who used to be homophobic (and I'm
not saying she was until I get more information, like a copy of the
letter she was responding to) can over time realize how wrong such an
attitude is and change it for the better. You know that, don't you?
People can change?

Tell me: Has she or American Atheists or ANY OTHER organization she is
connected with made *ANY* type of homophobic remark within the last few
years? Have they? No. They haven't.

Thus, dredging up such old dirt as Mr. Norlander has only serves to
prove what an obvious troll he really is. Q.E.D.

No, it's an atheist organization. But one which on July 14, 1988
unjustly sued every American Atheist corporation and all three of the
Murray-O'Hair family, charging them with counts involving mail fraud and
wire fraud under the destructive (civil) RICO statutes, as well as
trademark infringement.

American Atheists did eventually prevail (when on December 1, the U. S.
Supreme Court issued an order of refusal to grant a writ of certiorari
to the Truth Seeker Company in the case of Truth Seeker Company, Inc., v
John G. Jackson, et al.), but only after suffering from ten years of
harassment by Laurence A. True (an Episcopalian, (died May, 1996) member
of the board of trustees of his church in San Diego, California) and Roy
Withers, True's attorney.

Check your December 1997 (Vol 36, No. 12) issue of American Atheist
Newsletter for a quite thorough and revealing telling of the story. A
real nightmare, but one with a happy ending.

I have the complete acount in text form and can email it to you if you'd
like. It's quite interesting reading and after reading it you'll
understand the "bad blood" between American Atheists and the Truth
Seeker Company, producer of the oldest continuously published
"freethought" newspaper (later magazine) in the world (having been
around for over 116 years).

The atheist cult? That sounds suspicious already. Suspiciously like it
was written by a theist.

I suspect I am mistaken. I was taken aback by his use of "Atheist Movement",
grammatical errors, misspellings, constant changing of email addresses, etc.
He made all the stereotypical fundy invader mistakes.

I will be watching for patterns. I'm still unsure, but given what I've learned
of the bad blood some groups have for others, perhaps I'm wrong in this case.

I think sometimes I can "jump at shadows." Maybe this is one of those times,
and Mr. Nordlander really is as vindictive and petty as these posts suggest.

I am withdrawing my accusation. This poster is the real Nordlander.
My apologies. However, the rest stands. He is a troll. He exhibits
the behavior of a fundy invader. He is just an atheist one.

Too bad.

That's why he is #88 on the twit list. He's been exhibiting similar
behavior all along by posting unasked for articles to both atheist and
theist newsgroups. And, in spite of several requests for him to stop doing
this from aa alone (and probably the theist groups, too), he has ignored
all such requests. He was always egotistical and rude. Now, we can probably
add liar to that list.

He certainly seems to have a huge stick up his ass about O' Hair and
seems to practically worship Ingersoll. Has he perhaps traded his
supernaturalism for a more earthly yet still quite powerful religion?

He might be a good example of a "religious atheist."

I ran into a friend today on Haight Street, and he brought up
Ms. O'Hair. He was under the impression that she had
absconded with a bunch of money. He had not heard of the
grimly inauspicious uneaten breakfast (which I heard of for the
first time in this thread myself), or of the untouched bank
accounts, or the fact that the thief who stole what money was
stolen had been caught and jailed (another thing I learned here).
Apparently the religiously-biased establishment is doing a good
job of spreading distortion about this story.

Could very well be, and I doubt that Ingersoll would have wanted the
'worship' of such a person. I'm seriously considering killfiling him. He
doesn't reply, he simply asserts.

What world view is that? Atheism is merely lack of theism.

Some atheists maybe. But it is apart from atheism and not because of
it.

I thought they were Communist nations. They persecuted anyone who

I would have fought the Communists because they believe in
totalitarianism just like organized religion.

Nope.

You are right. Most Atheists are NOT homophobic.

Atheism is simply a denial of belief in a god. It has
nothing to do with ethics, politics, morality or anything
else not related to the "god" question.

Unfortunately, Madalyn Murray O'Hair had been perceived
as the guru of ALL Atheists therefire her homophobia
could be perceived as representative of the Atheists
of the U.S.A., if not her cult, American Atheists.

Your remarks on Camille Paglia were interesting.
If she is a lesbian - how could she be homophobic -
or does she just hate male homosexuals?

Oh, you mean the same American Atheists that had an outspoken gay as its

"American Gay Atheists" under its umbrella?

Yep, that sure looks like homophobia to me.

Does this "outspoken gay" have a name?

Did he ever confront Madame O'Hair about the
following:

The following memorandum* of Madalyn Murray O'
Hair shows that at least part of the Atheist community
is not immune from this bigotry.

The memorandum - dated May 20, 1976 - was addressed
to New York journalist John Lauritsen in response to his
protest against her homophobic remarks made to a
convention of one of her oganizations, the Society of
Separationists. The memorandum follows:

"The California Chapter of Society of Separationists, Inc.,
Has sent me a zerox [sic] copy of your letter dated May

Why is there a such a sub-group?

It was probably formed by gays who wanted to have their own group and be
associated with the main group. Doesn't this gay group exist anymore or did
they just join the main group?

You obviously know nothing about the history of American Atheists.
That, however, doesn't seem to stop you from making any number of
assumptions about it based on a single out-of-context document-- from
what source? I don't recall you mentioning that...

FYI his name was Don Sanders, from Houston Texas.

And what, specifically, were those *original* homophobic remarks about which
this person was complaining? And what exactly was the content of this
protest letter?

Unless you can explain it all in context, why are you necessarily
interpreting this as a blanket condemnation of all gays, instead of
possibly a disrespectful reply to this individual? And, particularly
in light of direct evidence that American Atheists as an organization
was the direct *antithesis* of a "homophobic" group?

It doesn't exist anymore, but a similar sub-group might pick up at some
point if someone wants to. As I understand it, it was a group dealing
primarily with gay issues, as they are particularly and specifically
targetted by many religious groups. There's also a veterans sub-group.

Sounds fine to me. Why shouldn't such a group as AA have sub-groups for
specific interests? I know that you aren't saying anything against this,
just asking the question for the benefit of those who would use this
against them.

is not immune from this bigotry.

The memorandum - dated May 20, 1976 - was addressed
