There is an interesting column on the Internet called "Sam Garrison's
DOORWAYS"--the URL is "http://www.joes.com/home/Doorways"--which purports to
"out" Ralph Reed and Gary Bauer as closeted gays on the basis of the author's
"gaydar" (a learned skill in identifying gay people by subtle physical/vocal
clues.) What is most interesting is the background of the author: the
former Chief Republican Counsel to the House Judiciary Committee's
impeachment proceedings against Richard Nixon in 1974! I don't know whether
"gaydar" qualifies as "gossip," but this lengthy column is simply fascinating
and well worth reading--twice! Just imagine applying "gaydar" to Hollywood,
Broadway, the musical world, etc. Ironically, "gaydar" involves a new sort
of stereotyping, based not on occupation per se but on physical appearance;
it matters not whether you're a truck driver or an actor. The main
implication is that, if one can learn to spot gay people with a high degree
of accuracy, it probably means that we're dealing with an organic rather than
psychological phenomenon, which pulls the rug out from under the religious
nuts who insist that sexual orientation is fundamentally different from race
as a physiological, immutable condition.

My gaydar is not very accurate; it works when I see someone like
Liberace, but beyond that I wouldn't put serious money on what my
gaydar tells me.

That having been said, Ralph Reed sets off a very loud and steady
"ping" for me. Don't know about Bauer; have never seen him on TV.

Mel, is your "instinct" a form of "gaydar?" Do you know Ralph? Have you
worked with him in the past in conservative causes? I'm sure he'd love your
comments. Is that, by chance, why you wrote them? Excuse my challenging
attitude, but you write as a gay man protective of a closeted gay friend. Am
I mistaken?

Um, no, I don't *know* Ralph, um, hello? I merely mentioned a passing
observation that I felt he was straight, just as someone else might
mention they thought he was gay. Does it make a difference? This is
APG, we're all here to speculate.

And no, I am not a gay man, try straight female, and I don't have a
gay friend I'm trying to protect. No conservative causes either.

But what about Rex Reed? Come on now....

Mel
remembering the time Rex reviewed one of the Alien films, yelling out
loud "for God's sake it's horible, it's just shaved heads!"

i have read the article referred to in earlier posts. i do have some
problems however with the "terms" used in it. i'm not sure what "mixed
gender" is. i do know that there are some people that are hermaphrodites.
they can be referred to as mixed gender. they truly have the "equipment" of
both genders. the people referred to in the article though, i don't believe
fit this category. they're sexual orientation is either straight, bi,
homosexual, or "other". i'm voting for "other". when i see either ralph
reed or gary bauer, my "gaydar" is set off. however i think back to a news
story on CNN where i saw a "CELIBATE GAY PRIEST" being interviewed. now
that's what i think about when i see those 2 - both celibate and gay -
without the priest. in short..... they're 2 pompous right wing limp dicks
that just ain't gettin any. they're destined to go the route of that
hypocritical asshole lawyer "COHN" that died of aids not long ago.

aloha,

geo

I agree about Ralph Reed but I have quite the opposite impression of
Gary Bauer. Something about his mouth always suggests to me that it
has very recently been hungrily gobbling on some dick. Like maybe even
in his dressing room before walking out onto the podium to spout his
insufferable tripe.

The Garrison column raises a lot of really interesting and important issues.
What is sexual orientation, anyway? I think it depends on what "turns you
on" sexually. A guy can be closeted, married, a father, in any job or
profession at all, and still be "gay" if normally and consistently he is
readily aroused by men rather than women. That leaves room for occasional
arousal by women, or even regular arousal by particular women, as long as the
general, typical, non-specific source of arousal is male. I think a
tremendous percentage of male actors are really gay, regardless of how
mightily their publicists strive to mislead us. Sometimes I wonder if more
than a handful of Hollywood leading men are truly straight. Call it my
"gaydar" if you wish. Garrison is right on the money about the general
concept of gaydar, and I think he is right about Reed and Bauer specifically.

Gary Bauer reminds me of a cross between Chuckie, from the Child's
Play movies, and Truman Capote.

Ralph Reed repeatedly tried to touch my penis while we were students at UGA.
