Overcrowded Britain. Not people but CARS. Why not double the price of petrol and make all public transport free?

OK, I drive.. I'd like to drive a lot less, particularly because I
hate traffic and crowded roads. I love trains, my favourite method of
transport besides sea and horse- why does, despite crowded roads, rail
fails go up well above inflation??? No problem with private operators
whatsoever. Couldn't the government decide what constitutes a fair
profit and cut taxes / increase subsidy till fares are really cheap.

Why the fuck do we have a national government at all if they can't run
a national transport system?

I have to drive a lot, due to business. Even now, the cost of fuel is
prohibitive.

Because Operators are not Charities. They do have to male a profit for their
shareholders.

Can't be done. The Government is already taxing fuel hugely. That is the
main cause of high fares. Also, of course, labour costs and Union demands.
It all gets passed on to you and me!

Because they have absolutely NO expertise in that regard. Governments have
always made a bollocks over national transport. Look at Dr. Beeching!! The
only thing that remotely worked when it was nationalised was British Rail.
Even that was overstaffed and over paid.

As for your suggestion to double the cost of petrol, and, I assume you mean
diesel as well? If you do that, then ALL goods would increase heavily in
price due to transport costs, and we would become uncompetitive abroad.

As you frequently appear on this group apparently under the influence of
drink and/or drugs, I'm sure other road users agree with your desire to
cut your mileage.

What you need, lad, is a long sea voyage to somewhere sunny....

Yes lets double the cost of fuel resulting in *everything* in the
shops going up in price.

Because they privatised it. Duh! :)

It seems to work in Italy. The price of a standard 'anytime' one-way rail
fare there is comparable here with an off-peak day return bought with a 33%-
discount railcard.

Which means in the UK we only get cheap travel when we go from A to B then
back to A that same day, so there is no flexibility at all.

He said public transport would be free, so that would balance things out a
little. But of course for commercial use the extra tax would be reclaimable.

(However on my car, fuel might need to increase by 5-10 times before I might
be tempted to take a bus, even if it's free!. Currently my diesel car costs
5-7p/mile/person (excluding fixed costs) with two people in the car, and the
ride is quick, comfortable, warm, door-to-door, safe, and we can fill the
boot with as much junk, or supermarket shopping, as we like.)

Good question. We don't need them. Goodbye. Next.
