I think that any party doing worse than the Tories in NE Glasgow must
be in pretty poor shape with absolutely no chance of making any
breakthrough in Scotland.

SNP: 4,120
Tories: 1,075
BNP: 1,013
Solidarity: 794
Lib Dems: 474

Turnout was only 32.97%.

Clearly getting 4.92% of the vote on a ~33% turnout is a resounding
victory for the BNP...

Also, remind which country recently elected BNP members to the European
parliament?

As you well know, James, under our fixed electoral system - deposits
required, media bias against small parties, the need to stand in 640
odd constituencies to make a convincing show of political strength -
getting even approximately 5% of the vote is extremely difficult,
whether pc approved or no-pc .-the greens consistently fail to do so in
Parliamentary elections. It is a significant development in Scotchland.

As far as Scotland is concerned the BNP have no seats and the Conservatives
have only one seat so that means one is non-existent and the other very much
a minority fringe party. The laughable thing is that many English people
claim that Scotland was responsible for electing the present Labour
Government. They totally ignoring the fact that with only 59 MPs at
Westminster, and the Labour working majority being 63, it means that even if
Scotland had returned every constituency as non-Labour the English would
still have elected a Labour Government.

It's all about who holds the power in NuLabcur, Auld Bob
Politicalsimpletoners... That was the Scotch in 1997, the large majority
of NuLabcur MPs elected in 1997 being those who had either not
previously sat or who had sat and been defeated in previous elections.
The only NuLabcur stronghold throughout the 18 years of Tory rule was
Scotchland. Hence, they filled the leadership position in 1997. . rh
