Marxists and laissez faire worshippers are made out of the same metal

they both reduce the world to economic relationships. I have spent my
entire adult life railing against this grotesque reduction of human
existence to the banal.
The laissez faire worshippers are less rational than the Marxists who at
least had a a system of thought which began (when Marx was writing) from
plausible premises, namely, that uncontrolled capitalism would lead to
a concentration of capital which would in the end make capitalism
unworkable. Moreover, when experience showed that Marx's interpretation
was at the least inadequate, Marxists developed other plausible
arguments such as the effects of colonialism to explain the success of
capitalism in extending its life.
The laissez faire worshippers never had more than wishful thinking on
their side. They initially rested their ideology on the rationality of
men always seeking their best economic interest and that this individual
action would translate into a general good personified by Adam Smith as
the invisible hand guiding the markets - a surrogate God. When it became
apparent that human beings frequently do not seek their own best
economic interests or even know what they are, the laissez faire gentry
shifted their ground ever more towards the metaphysical and chanted the
mantra "the market will provide". At that point it became a religion
pure and simple. RH

You nailed it. I've always said that pure free market capitalism (in
the vein of Milton Freidman) is just as naive about human nature as is
global Marxism (ie. Trotskyism).
