HEAD: Senior Dem: Kill the Senate health reform bill and start over
The Senate's healthcare bill is fatally flawed, a senior Democrat atop a
powerful committee said on Wednesday.
Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), the chairwoman of the House Rules Committee
and co-chairwoman of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus, said that the
Senate's bill is so flawed that it's unlikely to be resolved in conference
with the bill to have passed the House.
"The Senate health care bill is not worthy of the historic vote that the
House took a month ago," Slaughter wrote in an opinion piece for CNN's
website.
Slaughter argued that while the House bill is far from perfect, the Senate
bill's exclusion of a public option, along with abortion funding
restrictions and other measures, make the bill undeserving of a vote.
Specifically, Slaughter said, the Senate bill would charge seniors higher
premiums, would fail to nix health insurers' antitrust exemption and would
not go far enough in extending coverage to people in the U.S.
"Supporters of the weak Senate bill say 'just pass it any bill is better
than no bill,' " Slaughter wrote. "I strongly disagree a conference report
is unlikely to sufficiently bridge the gap between these two very different
bills."
The New York Democrat also sounded a note similar to what Republicans have
said (though for different reasons): Scrap the current healthcare bill, and
start over.
"It's time that we draw the line on this weak bill and ask the Senate to go
back to the drawing board," she said. "The American people deserve at least
that."
A Senate Republican aide chimed in on Slaughter: "Unfortunately for moderate
Democrats, all the sweetheart deals in the world couldnt help you win an
election when voters from across the political spectrum hate you because of
your support for this disastrous bill."

SOME COMMENTS FROM THE SITE:
It's one thing if you support a government takeover of health care. We can
have that debate all day. How in the world, though, do anyone support this
2000 page monstrosity full of corrupt deals and bribes?

You people have no clue as to what exactly is in the bill and you speak with
the authority of Bozo the clown on knowing what this is good for. Stop
following and start leading by your own investigation as to what this whole
mishmash contains and then label it if you must.

This bill is just going to make my good insurance more expensive and it will
place a tax on the sick by taxing medical devices that people need to live a
full life. Basically it evens the playing field by destroying the
middle-class so everyone except for the ultra rich will suffer. Also,
Slaughter just wants real Christians to pay for the slaughter of the unborn
against their consciences. God must have been sending a signal by giving her
that name.

I agree, get rid of all these dirt bags. They want something done before
their month long holiday break. Some Christmas present to the American
people. It doesn't pass the YUK test. Harry Reid needs a one ticket out of
DC along with the rest of these fools that are passing this piece of crap.

Yep, she's right for all the wrong reasons, even so, Kill The Bill, protect
our freedoms.
"If ObamaCare is so wonderful a prospect for America, why are the Dems in
Congress so anxious to pass it in Congress now? Why not wait until just
before the 2010 elections, and receive the thanks of a grateful nation's
voters?" (paraphrased)-- Dana Perino

I agree with Rep Slaughter and former Dem Chair Howard Dean: this bill is
wrong and should die.
Make health care the primary issue for next year's Congressional elections.
That will clarify an issue which obviously does not have enough consensus to
come to a good resolution at this point in time.
The plan at this point for the Democrats should be very simple:
1. The House simply signs off on the Senate bill and sends it to Obama
for the ceremonial signature.
2. The House creates 2 or more "single issue" health care bills that fix
the parts of the current LAW (created by the current Senate bill) that
were messed up trying to suck up to Republicans.
3. These bills are then forced onto the floor for up and down votes
holding each representative accountable on that particular bill.
The first of these bills will be the Public Option bill that will be
absolutely defined and described in both legalese and plain English and
on line for all the world to see. It will be made clear that the rest of
the current LAW is not being repealed or altered accept where specific to
the enactment of the CHOICE OF PARTICIPATING IN THE PUBLIC PLAN. As 60%
of the people want this _CHOICE_, no Republicans will be re-elected to
office. It is a bonanza for the Democrats.

The primary problem with the current legislation is the lack of the
Public Option or any suitable alternative that will hold the insurance
companies in check. So the Public Option should be a bill on its own and
voted up or down in the Congress.
As explained and reiterated by all Democrats, the current legislation is
a beginning and not an end. There are a lot of very good IMMEDIATE
things in the current bill passed by the Senate, not the least of which
is the _END_ of rescission in cases other then provable fraud. All of
the things that are not good or are missing do not happen for another 3
years. And that gives the Democrats almost all of 2010 to strengthen
Medicare, and the "high risk pool", and to add the Public Option if
necessary. They have the hammer, and they set the agenda.
. . .
Big Med and Big Parma are spending tens of millions for ad time to
tell their lies so the media have a real interest in stretching this
out as long as possible.

The Dems should sign off on the current bill and start working on a stand
alone "Public Option" bill to ADD TO THE LAW CREATED BY THE CURRENT BILL.
In that way pig crap like "death squads" and the like cannot be used by
the lying pigs. All of the confusing stuff is over with and done.
No Surrender!

....and don't worry at all whether you can pay for it. When the economy
crashes (and I mean CRASHES, in excess of the Depression) because the
world gets tired of footing our largesse, you can blame it on the
Republicans.

OR.... :-)
Always remember that the only true prosperity is that which is
sustainable. Don't go making promises you can't deliver on. TEACH people
that if ALL produce, ALL prosper.

You're not all wrong here. The GOP "model" often uses conservativism as
a talking point and then unbalances the equation in favor of corporations.
If you're a real conservative (which the GOP is not always) you believe
that the government's role is to maintain a level playing field between
all participants. This means that corporations aren't right all the time.

Merry Christmas, JG.

The issue was best illustrated in "Matrix Revolutions", when the Oracle
says (of the Architect, who was the resident fascist):
Oracle: Please... You and I may not be able to see beyond our own
choices, but that man can't see past any choices.
Neo: Why not?
Oracle: He doesn't understand them - he can't. To him they are variables
in an equation. One at a time each variable must be solved and
countered. That's his purpose: to balance an equation.
Neo: What's your purpose?
Oracle (narrows her eyes, lowers tone in her voice, says with a hard
edge): "To UNBALANCE it."
And....of course, we have a difficult political situation with both
parties having some very strong fascist tendencies, although they tend
to manifest themselves differently.
